If anybody wants a rec for a cheap-ish waterproof camera, the one we have is $89 on Amazon right now and we were very happy with it last year: http://www.Amazon.com/Kodak-EasyShare-Waterproof-Digital-Camera/dp/B004FLL5C2/ref=pd_sim_p_5 It's obviously not SLR quality, but the pics we took were all just pics of people goofing around, mugging in the pool, dressed up for a club, whatever. In other words, they're pics we'll always love having to scroll through on the computer and remember the fun but nothing that we're going to blow up and frame. For that type of picture, the little Kodak is perfect to me. The picture quality was far better than I was expecting, too. Oh, and if you have it in the pool be sure to wipe the lens off before using it - it gets covered in that lovely film of sunscreen. (And don't take pics of people you don't know, duh.)
Just to give everyone the heads up about how secure hotel safe's are.... if you enter "00000" (5 zero's) they will open automatically, it is the reset code in case you accidentally change your password to the safe while you're drunk. This has worked on almost every hotel we've stayed at... TTR included.
We have used one of these for years now. Costs $25, keeps wallets, camera, phones, etc. safe from your average piece of shit thief, and it protects from splashes. You set your own combination, and it has a cable that you can wrap around a chair or something. It's called the Vacation Vault.
We have one of those too, but it is about the size of a football. The plastic vacation vault is also good because my wife can use it like a purse.
So far, knock on wood, we've had zero problems anywhere... DR/jamaica or mexcio. We take the cameras, phones, laptop and Ipad/ipod. no issues. Laptop doesnt fit in the safe, we just lock it in the luggage, if we even think to lockit.
Our safe didn't take our code when we first used it, or it was entered wrong, one of the two. At any rate we couldn't get the safe to open so we had to have the technician come down and reset it. He had to insert a special key and force an override of the code. I certainly never saw him just type a bunch of 0's and it opened. Seems to me that would be a massive fatal flaw for any safe maker to have in their system. Even if the "reset code" was a random number like 523675 it would still be a fairly huge mistake. Not calling anyone a liar, I just find it hard to believe entering nothing but 0's opens all the safes in TTR. Might as well make the codes 12345 and call it a day. :icon_eek:
Ive tried the 00000 thing and it didnt work...I have a expensive watch collection and bring 3-4 to TTR everytime we go and have never had a problem leaving them in the safe
I brought a 15" MacBook (sadly, I cannot ever go anywhere without it...) and it did fit in our safe but it kind of had to be shoehorned in...it rested at an angle, not flat. Still had plenty of room for our stash of 20 peso bills, passports, ipods, etc. Nothing stolen.
