You can't compare the Cancun hotel strip to Mexico city. And you can't compare either to the lonely roads from Cancun to Belize. Always be careful, but don't let paranoia ruin your vacation. To answer your first question - I use my Visa and ATM cards. ATM for everyday purchases, the Visa for the big dinners and big club nights. Never had a problem with either.
Dude its the same as ANY large city anywhere in the world! Point being.......... Use common sense, don’t do anything stupied, obey the laws and you will be just fine!

Yeah, Cancun hotel zone is more like SoCal than the rest of Mexico. If you are worried, just don't go downtown.
Apparently your bank will give you a better exchange rate when you use your credit card than the banks there..
