well, i was planning on attending a few of the games ever before they announced the was moving. however, youre right there will probably be more girls there than guys when becks is in town. the thing with toronto fc is that, yes, there were 500 season tickets sold yesterday. they will be just so people can attend that game that he'll be playing to guarantee they have tickets for it. toronto is such a multicultural city where there are huge amounts of football fans, but these fans already have teams in which they support whether it be in the italian leauge, the premier leauge or where ever. i doubt that toronto will ever have the fan base that they are hoping for. andn from all the people ive spoken too, said that they wont be attending games...big names like beckham will pull the fans in for the odd game, but i can see them having spasely filled stands for other games. so yes, beckham will bring some attention to the game, but will it be the attention they are looking for?
i completely agree. where we have access to the fox soccer channel and get the mls games, i never watch them. i find the games hard to watch. i dont find it as organized for lack of a better term.
Well theres already talk about some of the games great aging stars joining beckham in the MLS Zidane - Ronaldo - Figo - Cafu Have all been mentioned, at this rate we might see a bit of a 70s style NASN thing where the old stars go for one last payday... We shall see what happens!
My take on it....and soccer in general......I dont hate it, but at the same time Im not in line to buy my next world cup tickets anytime soon either haha. The LA Galaxy will draw a bigger crowd, for obvious reasons, and the MLS will reap the benefits of having this huge star in their league.....On that note, didnt they say the same thing about Freddy Adu?
In footballing terms...Freddy Adu is a nobody, he's proved nothing, Beckham has won almost everything possible at club level I think the proof is apparent, this story is in every leading paper accross the globe hence LA Galaxys name is in every paper across the world the marketing has already begun
Hopefully the MLS will not go down the drain like the NASN did by pouring money into players who were big names, but past their primes. I would love to see MLS actually become a respected league in the international eye. Maybe if enough big name players along with more talented slightly less known players were to join MLS teams it could happen.
I watched that Once In A Lifetime movie and that must have been one hell of a time over there with all the big big stars of the day! NASN is a sad thing because i think if it had been managed better Football would be a bigger sport in the US now! I think the big name players if they keep coming will bring something out of the league I dunno but I think its a good time and certainly get out to see Beckham play...Because although he is not in his prime now he is still a very good player
Beckham is definitely still a very good player. Like you said, hopefully big name players (who are usually big name because of big talent) will start to riase the level of play in the MLS. I think MLS is going about things much differently than the NASN. The emphasis has been on developing talent from the ground up so far rather than hoping that big names will carry the league. Even if Beckham ends up being a $250 MIL commercial, the league can still survive without him. Teams are building their own stadiums and fans are going to see the games already. MLS has a long range plan for development and hopefully adding people like Beckham will help it along. If Red Bull New York (the closest team to me) had a higher level of play, I would be much more likely to go watch their games. For now though, I can see nearly the same level of play with college teams.
oooo yes, they are building from ground up. ive seen the open tryouts for toronto. but they brought jim brennan to toronto cause enough for me togo to a few games
