The Human Contract Last night I saw the movie, "The Human Contract", in the theaters here known as, "Perverciones", playing at MMCinemas, Paseo Cancun. The Spanish title is misleading, although the themes are adult. What the movie is really about is the way in which the life of one person can sometimes be positively impacted by the life of another, even though their time together may have been brief. This movie, produced by Will Smith, while developing themes you've seen before, does so in a way which is profound. The colors are rich, and the pace slow, perfectly matched to the evolution of the character of a very troubled, though successful, early middle aged American man. Through his brief association and sexual liaison with a woman whom he finds powerfully attractive (who wouldn't, it was Paz Vega), he is challenged to open himself up to a past which has held him prisoner. Not easily described, this is a movie which can be deeply affecting for those whose life may have prepared them to appreciate it. I was enthralled and captivated by this film, as was the person who accompanied me to see it. We sat in our chairs afterwards, and marveled at what we had seen.
Imaginary World of Dr Parnassus Unless you're just dying to see Heath Ledger in his last movie, or want to see what the director did to solve the problem of what to do when your lead dies, you might consider giving "The Imaginary World of Dr Parnassus" (translation of Spanish title) a miss. I enjoyed it, but I went prepared to accept whatever it turned out to be, given that the critics had said it was an amazing film for its "imaginative scenes" (as you'd expect, from the title). Nevertheless, the story is amusing, if not very "meaty"; the characters charming, and the scenes are indeed rich in color, and imagination. Stars Christopher Plummer in the title role. (Hard to believe we were watching him 45 years ago as a middle aged, Captain Von Trapp, in Sound of Music, and that he can still make it to the studios and remember his lines after all these years! He did, indeed, look his age, at 80, but handled the role well, I thought.) Also stars Judd Law, Colin Farrel, Johnny Depp, and a very cute young British actress, Lily Cole. Now playing at all theaters in Cancun.
Toy story 3 was very good. Maybe not quite as good as the first one but definitely better than number 2. I usually end up enjoying these pixar films more than others.
I saw the A Team on its opening day in the states, in the morning no less. The reviews were really awful but I thought it rocked, as did my whole group. Males, females, kids, young adults and not so young adults. Can't wait to see it again. Peversiones is gone but I saw it before it closed. Almost an artsy fartsy movie, better off at a non main stream theater. V did not point out that Jada Pinkett Smith, was the writer and director. It was an extremely well written and well acted film (from 2008). Jada had a small role in the film. You don't see Paz Vega that much but she is a Penelope Cruz looking type, only better looking and an adequate actress in this film, which she and Jason Clarke had the only real major roles. Ted Danson was also in it but his part was also small. I do hate it when major actors are promoted only to have some not so major parts. Very enjoyable.
