It's all in how you pack stuff. Since we generally wind up with layovers, checked bags cost money and add time. I've learned to look at "creative packing" as part of the fun of trip planning. And I am definitely not low maintenance...I like to pack twice as many outfits as days so I have options, plus theme outfits.... I'm a huge fan of those vacuum seal bags that you roll all of the air out of--you can almost double your space. Also, at TTR, you'll spend days in bathing suits, put on something sexy for dinner, then change into theme wear. You'll need a lot fewer shorts and tops than you would other places.
AFTER SEEING THE WIFES THEME NIGHT OUTFITS -- we will be fine with 2 small personal items flying with spirit...
Do they have vacuums at the security check points ? I do the bags too, mostly to keep things dry ( actually had our luggage soaked in jet fuel one year ) ,, but i always worry about them checking are luggage and having to open the bags at the airport
When our neighbors see us leaving for Cancun, my wife has so much luggage, that they assume that we are moving.
Been to Mexico 4 times and traveled with carry ons only everytime. Really not that hard to do, just have to be honest with yourself about what you are REALLY going to need, not just what you might need. The time saver getting through customs has made it more than worth it. Also on the return trip home, we tell our travel arranger that we only have carry ons, they allow us an extra hour or 2 at the resort before they pick us up.
Almost everyone I know that has travelled with AC has had luggage issues, especially with stops in Toronto heading south and with short stopovers. Not taking a chance! I have no doubt we'll be able to carry everything in 2 carryons each.
I guess everyone's needs are just different. For the 30 minutes we might save at the airport, it's just not worth it. In Mexico's humidity, there's no way I'm going to wear something twice. For us, the decision couldn't be any easier...we bring the absolute maximum the airline allows.
The bags we have don't have to be vacuumed--you just roll the air out of them. I think they're labelled either "travel" or "multipurpose." I've worried about the checkpoint, too, but have been lucky so far (**knocking frantically on wooden desk**)
