If I was going on a backpacking trip through the mountains, I might decide packing light makes sense. Since suitcases have wheels and airplanes have those big cargo holds...I'm gonna go ahead and bring the max. If I suggested to Jamie that she should try to fit all her makeup, shoes, dresses, blow dryer, curling iron and whatever else into a carry-on...she'd punch me in the neck.

Thanks everyone you've given some good arguments both pro and con....certainly lots to think of...funny thing is it's the wife that says we could do it. I myself keep thinking there's no way we can do it with the stuff we normally take but then again there's always a few things that made it into the bag yet never got worn or used...well other than the 3 bathing suits I packed as I hate putting a damp suit back on. And whose kidding who I could wear the same shirt and shorts all week long and no one would care everyone's always watching the women anyway....

We used to do this before we found Temptation, but now she needs more shoes, more outfits etc. The only thing she brings less of is bikini tops... Considering Cancun is the absolute worst airport I have been to, I would love to go back to carry on only. The first trip there, there was a huge lineup to get through security and a few planes came in, the whole group of them widened the line and made their way through ahead of people who had been waiting patiently. Several arguments and near fights broke out, no staff took control of the situation - Sept'11. In April '12, our baggage cart was parked outside the belt, and they all went on break. We could see our bags through the window but had to wait over 25 minutes before anyone came to unload them. Sept.'12 actually went remarkably well so I am hopeful that Oct. will be smooth.

Never tried it but then from the Uk you get between 15kg-23kg (33 - 50lb) hold allowance. I do agree about leaving sun cream etc out as that is easy to get there. There is a pharmacy over the road from TTR that has a good range of stuff and i think the supermarket is OXO and is a little further up on the lagoon side

I agree with this 100%. For the few minutes you save waiting for your luggage on the carousel at the airport...nothing is really gained by traveling extra light. The negatives make it a no-brainer for me - like bussing to Wal-mart and wasting half a day, or paying $30 for a 1 hr stop on your transfer when you could be in the Sexy Pool, then paying a premium for things you need, wearing the same clothes several times, etc, etc. I'm on vacation...I want to relax and be comfortable...avoid Walmart and leave the resort only when the catamaran shows up at the pier and Steve says "Let's go and ladies...just hand your bikini top to the guy with the big smile, tattoos and piercings...and the giant glittery penis".

This thread is really entertaining. As a airline people, we're always curious what people can possibly bring to have to check a bag, let alone a small u-haul for a suitcase. As I said, we usually take two carryons a piece. The huge misconception has been that you have to skimp on clothing you take if you only do carryons. Not!

Actually, for what's been posted, we probably take the most... With two carryons each. Before we go to any TTR or Desire vacation I either go on a shopping spree or he buys a bunch of outfits, swim suits, and shoes for me. Granted, not much is needed for Desire but we still need evening gowns for dinner and dancing. We also need clothing for excursions outside the resort.

For a typical 7 night stay, I'll have daytime clothes, at least 6 sexy bikinis, a different gown for each dinner and at least 4 pairs of shoes. I take a straightener and they usually have hair dryers. We also take clothes for theme nights AND gym clothes. On top of that, Arvin usually brings about 4 bottles of wine. These are standard airline carryons for crew and knowing the bin space, we don't even expand them. I might have to use a little bit of his, but he makes all of his swim suits with sexier material, so they don't take up much room either.

This will be our first trip with just carryons but we aren't sweating it at all. We aren't doing it to travel light...we have a 1 hr stop in Toronto and are travelling Air Canada...we want to ensure we get our luggage!
