Exactly. Which is why most people kept their noses clean and sectarian violence was minimised.

    And there were Christian churches.

    None of those left now.

Sort of a reverse-crusade. Well done Dubya!

if I have to give up some privacy in order to be safe I will. the searching of homes sounds a little far fetched... I'd like to see the section of the patriot act that claims this.

Download the PDF of it from the .gov website. It's all there.

Methinks you trust governments (of any type) too much.

They are doing all sorts of weird shit right now under the guise of "homeland security"

Even that name gives me the heebeegeebees.

    "privacy"

At the risk of opening up the debate further I just want to answer Scott. The Patriot Act gives the US Government many rights that it did not previously have including:

    - The right to search your home and not inform you they have done so. They can enter your home, seize items and take pictures and not tell you right away.
    - The right to collect information on your medical history.
    - The right to collect information on your purchases.
    - The right to collect information on the books you read and what you study.
    - The right to obtain records showing what you do online as well as the subject lines of your emails.

I think that what you have given up is your privacy!

    hey rivergirl-
i have nothing to hide- if they want to search my home, they are welcome to it- and they won't find anything that will be of interest to them.
my purchases? go right ahead- i'm not buying shoulder-launched missiles, or weapons; just groceries, electronics, and less than lethal goods.
i wish they would collect info on what i read!!!
i don't talk to terrorists in my email, by regular mail, or carrier pigeon- and i am not researching info on how to make a bomb-
and finally, go ahead and collect info on my medical history- again nothing to hide.

i really wonder if you will try to understand the message i am conveying- probably not though, as your mind seems intent on only providing excuses and quotes, without any actual substance- point is this- for the average american that has nothing to hide, there really isn't anything to worry about- the goverment is NOT interested, again, in what you say to your neighbor regarding his infidelity, or what happened at the office water cooler last week. THEY DON'T CARE!!!
ok- what part of that is so hard to understand?
oh- drewbert- if you think we are only talking about "my freedoms"- just wait until the entire south american continent becomes socialist, and just where they will move to- yes, mexico- and then you'll be crying for the US to intervene, when your freedoms suddenly disappear.

Errr. But I'm the same as you - I have noting to hide - why should I worry about socialists taking away my freedoms?

PS - here's a hint. The Jews in Germany thought they had nothing to hide either - they weren't doing anything wrong - see where THAT got them?

The USA has a well defined constitution, seperate of powers and seperation of state and religion for VERY GOOD REASONS.

Letting people trample over those just because YOU have nothing to hide, is the ultimate in stupidity.
