I was joking about not knowing what the UN does.... but I agree.... they've become a political organization that is bogged down in procedure and red tape.
Why do I like Bush (by Ian) Bush did what needed to be done after 9/11 to ensure that his country would be protected. He knew that it wouldn't be popular but he did it anyway. Why? Because it was the right thing to do. He didn't worry about votes or how it would effect him down the road. Movie makers like Michael Moore have done him a disservice by making movies that people believe are factual. The media plays up his verbal mistakes to make him look stupid. Do you really believe that a dumb person could make it to the highest position in the US? He's a leader who has tried to set the example for his people and for other leaders around the world by the way he acts and by taking responsibility for some things that might not be his responsibility alone.
I agree with that. So far we have been relatively safe since 9/11. I am sure there are a number of close-calls we dont know about, but the bottom line is that they did not happen. I am going to refrain from discussing Homeland Security methodology for now though.
Still waiting for some thoughtful commentary from those who believe in Bush as to why they support him! So far all I've seen are reactionary comments and one-liners in response to those two with whom I seem to be more politically aligned (Lambert and RiverGirl). Come on, guys, explain as clearly and well why you're for Bush as Lamber and RiverGirl did with their objections! Don't just counter with arguments against what they said! In response: first, neither ian or my self seems to be arguing with their opinions- as they are entitled to- but if you look at what they have written, they seem to point out the negative/problems without actually offering any solutions- classic case of the liberal argument of how to solve a problem. i still support george bush, because i truly believe he has the best interests of the american people in his heart- my father fought in korea, was almost shot down (lost fellow soldiers in his plane), and i have relatives in the military. while it is sad that we keep losing soldiers, i will point out what another person made so obvious: our military is all-volunteer- no one in this day and age was drafted, though i kind of wish they would reinstate it, so all those who bash our troops and the military (when you bash bush, you bash the military- he is the commander-in-chief, lest you forget) would get a first hand look at what they go through, and also what they have accomplished through the decades so we, in the US, can have the freedoms we enjoy. would you prefer a president that totally withdraws all our troops, from every nation? should we fall into an isolationist mode, and let all the terror groups and their leaders actions go unchecked? where, please tell me, will this lead us? down the road, it will lead to Israel being bombed with nuclear weapons, and eventually, a device being set off in the US- or maybe Canada. face it- this is the world we live in today- you cannot talk to these groups or their leaders- we have tried this before- in 1994, Clinton gave millions of dollars to Kim Jong Il's regime, to supposedly start a light water nuclear reactor- and what was the condition? well, he promised to "not pursue nuclear weapons"- we all know how that turned out, don't we? i could go on and on, but i really don't like to have to repeat what is so obvious, should you decide to study history. bush is the only one in the white house that is not acting for the political good- if he was, the troops would be home, and his approval rating would be sky-high. he is acting in the interests of the american people, and while you may not like it- or oppose the fact that our soldiers are dying for our cause- the alternative is a future where we may not enjoy all the freedoms we do today, and one in which an american city may become a nuclear wasteland. remember, no one thought terrorists could bring down 2 of the tallest skyscrapers in the world...
what the north koreans think... this is directly from a north korean newspaper, dated today- please read Defence of Global Peace and Security Called for Pyongyang, January 10 (KCNA) -- To defend the global peace and security at present is an urgent requirement and task of the times which no one can turn aside from as it is a vital issue related to the destiny of humankind. Rodong Sinmun today observes this in a signed article. It goes on: The U.S.-led imperialist forces are becoming evermore undisguised in their moves for aggression and war. This requires all the countries to turn out as one to defend the global peace and security. It is the U.S.-led imperialists that pose the biggest threat to the global peace and security. It is the basic requirement for defending the global peace and security to deal a deadlier blow at the staggering U.S. imperialists badly beaten in different parts of the world. It is very important to strengthen the non-aligned movement. The NAM serves as a very effective and strong force in achieving the above-said objective. It is necessary to be vigilant against the imperialist forces' moves to drive a wedge and sow the seeds of dissension among its member countries. It is equally important to give momentum to the trend of the world towards regional cooperation and multi-polarization. It is essential to foil the moves of the allies of the U.S. imperialists for aggression. Japan has emerged a dangerous aggressor force in Asia backed by the U.S. Israel has a scenario to attack the nuclear facilities in Iran. The situation is growing tenser wherever there are forces toeing the U.S. line. It is, therefore, important to pressurize and isolate those forces toeing the U.S. war policy to deter them from running wild, while intensifying the struggle against the U.S. It is necessary for each country to build up its own strength to defend the global peace and security. The practical experience gained by the DPRK proves that a country can prevent a war and protect its sovereignty and peace only when it attaches importance to the military affairs and bolster its self-reliant defence capability. This year, too, the Korean people will smash the moves of the U.S. imperialists to provoke a new war, defend the peace on the Korean Peninsula and firmly protect the global peace and security, united close with all the anti-imperialist independent forces in the world under the uplifted banner of Songun. OK- so you still think we are the problem???
That was alot of word that said absolutely nothing... like most comunist propaganda it talks about how bad the other guys are but stears clear of specifics. "The U.S.-led imperialist forces are becoming evermore undisguised in their moves for aggression and war"
I support bush because its my right to......you dont support him because its your right not to.....I dont criticize you for not supporting him, so why do you criticize us?
Fletch: what's with the snippiness and attitude? I asked WHY because I genuinely want to know. I assume that you're refering to me in that last post, but please go back and check...I certainly did not criticize you. I simply asked for Bush supporters to elaborate on why they feel that way. That is ALL I said. Why some people can calmly explain their perspective (and thank you for doing so, those who did, although I may never agree, it's enlightening) and others have to get their panties all in a twist and give some knee jerk smart aleck response without ever answering an inquiry for more information is beyond me.
Well I support Bush as well. As mentioned in some earlier post, The War was started due to Saddam's refusal/interference with inspections called for by the U.N., the belief that WMD existed has they had in the past, the support of terrorist by Saddam, etc.... I will admit that no WMD have been found but the other points remain valid. There has been a lot of political pressure on Bush to pull out and I admire him for having the guts to stand firm in his decision. This country would be a lot better off if we had more like him but we are stuck with a lot that chance their mind every time the wind blows. I for one am sick of hearing the term P.C. I was raised by a Korean War vet with a very strong conviction that there are no gray areas. What’s right is right and what is wrong is wrong and that does not change from day to day depending on who contributes the most. As for pulling the troops out, I agree that pulling them out before the country is stabilized would be the wrong thing to do for several reasons. First and most importantly, No matter how you feel about Bush, I was raised to believe that you finish what you start. We started this war and it is our responsibility as a country to stabilize the area. Bush understands that. Iraq would fail into a far worse state of madness if we left. Secondly, I do feel bad for the troops that have been injured or killed. However, I do remember at one point during the war hearing a report that terrorist from around the world were heading to Iraq to fight. Would anybody rather have them hiding out in their camps planning attacks like 9/11. I can assure you that the soldiers are a lot better equipped/trained to handle the situation than you or a redneck southern boy like myself. Third and final point (again back to how I was raised), I grew up with only two options, do what I was told or deal with the punishment promised. The U.N. had warning Saddam with how many resolutions? If we did not back up our threats, the country would have been viewed as weak and up to further attacks. Now for the one part I do not like about this war. The decision to go to war is a political matter. However, after war has been declared, the politicians have not business telling the military how to fight the war. The war could have gone a lot better if the people that have spent their lives learning and training to fight were allowed to call the shots. Unfortunately, we are a nation of armchair quarterbacks and politicians are no different. That’s my two cents worth as requested.
I object! I may not have solutions (although I do have some ideas) but does that mean my opinion does not matter? Since the administration is right-wing, and you agree with them you have a ready-made excuse for not needing to provide solutions. You think the solution is what Bush is already doing. That's nice and neat isn't it? You are off the hook and don't need to delve into the complexities of the situation! But the liberals need to know exactly how to clean up that whole frigging mess in Iraq or our opinions don't matter? Thanks a lot! We were against this from the beginning and now you want us to tell you how to fix it? I can't begin to tell you how ridiculous that is. At this point lots of people are dead who should not be! And the best solution for everyone is to stop the killing and start the listening. I believe that Iraq may not ever be ready for American style democracy. What they need is something else, something which accounts for the huge cultural differences among the people of that nation, something which may not exist under one flag! Saddam was a bastard and ruled with an iron fist but because of that he was able to hold together a nation which would probably have fallen apart under many other systems. What I think, is that Iraq needs to fall apart. And then it needs to put itself back together, without our "help"!
