So how does one go about hiring a driver? Whether at TTR or elsewhere. We will be 10 mins from that beach and our daughter adores turtles. Ideally hiring a driver means they know where best to go and doesn't just drop us off in the general area where we fend for ourselves. No point in paying for a tour when we are already so close I assume?

Xel Ha is awesome! It includes EVERYTHING you could ask for! Food, drink, inner tubes, snorkel equipment, bicycles, lockers. Being accompanied by your daughter, she'd have a ball, regardless of age. There are cliffs to jump off of, a lazy river, hammock island, ropes bridges and a fun pontoon bridge.

Another excursion we enjoyed is Rio Secreto. It is located just south of Playa del Carmen. You swim and hike through some amazing caves and enjoy a buffet afterwards.

We were at Xel-ha January 5th and absolutely loved it. If you are into nature and snorkelling, it is awesome. The website says it is $US89 per person at the gate. We took our 23 and 24 year old kids with us and they loved it as well. Took the floaties down the river twice as it was so relaxing. Spend the whole day there as it is worth it. Food and drinks including alcohol are included. Go for breakie, tour around, have lunch, snorkel, have a few pints, snorkel, tour the cenotes, have a few pints, snorkel,.....you get the idea. Check out their website for details.
    Enjoy.

We did deep sea fishing a few years ago. We caught a lot of fish but it was very rough. A lot of people got sick. The price was very reasonable for a group and included lunch and beer. If you decide to go take it easy the night before and take a lot of dramamine or your preferred motion sickness drug.

    I'd do it again.

We did Xel ha with 4 families and really enjoyed the whole thing. It was an exhausting adventure, lots of swimming and water activities (no not water sports). Swimming around the sting ray area was super fun. Keep some of your bread from lunch and feed it to the fish under the long bridge, you will get very close to some big fish.
Remember it's somewhat of an amusement park, so there will be plenty of people and you do have to wait in line for a few things depending on the crowd.

I was at Xel-Ha in January also. It was a fun day, lots to do. I did however find it very expensive ( When you factor in the exchange for the CDN peso, its almost criminal!). There is plenty to do for the day thats included in the entrance fee, however the really good attractions are extra. ( Eg the good zip lines, snuba and swimming with the dolphins)

We didn't do everything, and ended up down over 1 grand after exchange.
Did once, don't think i could justify it again.

On a side note, we missed seeing Justin Beliber getting kicked out of the Tulum ruins by 2 hrs!

We have done day trip and overnight trip to Playa Del Carmen. It is nice for different bars, restaurants, shopping, beach. Very, very nice area. You can get there by taxi or bus.
Xcaret, we loved the whole thing, snorkeling, the animals etc.. food was ok.
Cozumel, we hated it, it was like a large flea market. We could have went to the flea market close to the hotel.
Crab House restaurant, on the lagoon side, great meal overlooking the water, a bit pricey though. There are others on that side that look interesting too.
Lunch at the Taco Factory! It's a little hole in the wall in the hotel zone. There are many other little restos there that we might have to try next time.
    Hope this helps!

We did the Xplor 2 years ago. This is the Zip Lines, there are underground caverns you can swim and/or raft through. The off road vehicles are a blast. It included our meals and drinks (non alcoholic) Zip lines are a little scary but tons of fun.

All we did was go to the front desk and ask. They recommended one and called for us.

(At TTR, I think I'd ask the valets or the front desk staff.)

At Akumal, you can rent masks and snorkels for $10. You just walk into the water about 50 yards, and the turtles are right there!

If you're in that area, Tulum is also a good tour (if you're into human sacrifice!) We did the tour in the morning and spend the afternoon with the turtles. They're only about a 15-minute drive from each other, I think.

When you say Tulum is a nice tour if you enjoy human sacrifice do they have a little booth off to the side where you pick a virgin like you would the lobster and they do that on the spot? LOL, we did Chichen Itza a couple of years back and you couldn't get near anything even the ball court was down and we talked about checking out Tulum and one of the parks that's close to it.
