Re freak parties, check out the list of candidates from the last by election in the UK. It's good in a way as it's true democracy at work, anyone can stand for election providing they pay a small deposit which is refundable if they get a certain percentage of the vote. It's not all about who has the money to fund the biggest campaign and who has the big business backers. Re the US election I'd like to know why this whole thing drags on for two years (when other countries get it over with in a month) and policies only really get discussed at the last minute with the rest of the time being only about personalities. One thing that has really surprised me is that it seems many people don't have a clue who or what they're voting for in any case despite the huge media coverage. Check out this Howard Stern youtube recording: Is the general US population really this uninformed?
You know... as funny as that Stern bit is, it's very sad. I would venture to say that a great deal of people do not have a clue what they are voting for. I would also say that a large amount of people probably will be voting on race, which I find ridiculous. The President does have a certain amount of authority, but there is a reason that we have tiered levels of government... So no President has complete control of the government. The President may have the authority to veto bills, but they don't get dream up bills and enact them as law. Everything goes through different levels of government. That way we have more people to blame when things go wrong. As for the ultimate answer to your question... I do believe that many people who vote here in the U.S. are definitely uninformed. With all of the exposure (that you also pointed out... in which we also dread here in the U.S.), you should have some idea of what you are voting for. Between newspapers, television, internet, flyers, etc. And you should definitely know who the running mate is. Ha!
I think this year, people seemed MORE informed to be honest. I remember in past election years, people really seemed to not care. At least around here, everyone seems to have an opinion and they are all well informed of who they are infact voting for!! At least around here......... I am sure other parts of the country people are clueless!
and those are the people who are the most annoying with it, the ones who have an opinion about everything and they HAVE TO be right about it.....from what I've gathered at least
I was thinking about this comment the other day when I noticed that there is now a 24/7 Axe commercial also on Dish Network (Watch and Win The Axe Sweet Life). WTF is the deal?
Strange, "racist" is exactly what Obama and John Murtha called people from Western Pennsylvania. I hope you elect Murtha your Rep again; perhaps he can enact more laws that will set you folks straight? Enjoy: "WASHINGTON -- Democratic Rep. John Murtha said Wednesday his home base of western Pennsylvania is racist and that could reduce Barack Obama's victory margin in the state by 4 percentage points. The 17-term Democratic congressman told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a story posted Wednesday on its Web site: "There is no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area." http://elections.foxnews.com/2008/10/15/congressman-says-western-pa-racist-obama-win/
Murtha also called Western Pennsylvania "redneck" ... the man certainly doesn't speak for ME! I've never voted for him, and I never will, I don't live in his district. He's just another old man who needs to retire! 10/30/08 ~ FYI ... Murtha is apologizing all over the place for calling people of Western PA "racist" and "rednecks", and just today on t.v. he said, "God da_ _ " !!! OH YES, HE'S JUST ANOTHER OLD MAN WHO NEEDS TO RETIRE!!!
