Maybe, for now. Sweden will likely get far fewer overall though as the spread will be stopped via herd immunity, while other countries go through multiple phases of outbreaks. All without crashing their economy.
Most experts I’ve read, have said that social distancing won’t really lower the deatht count. It just delays it.
Sweden also has a number of factors going for it compared to the US. Much healthier population on average (ranked top 10 worldwide), nearly half the US obesity rate, more doctors per capita, greater access to routine medical care, goverment mandated sick pay, and a population that appears to be more compliant with recommended medical treatment (nearly 100% voluntary compliance with immunization for communicable diseases). I am not sure that Sweden's approach (even if ultimately deemed successful) would play out the same way in the US.
This CNN story came out 4 hours ago.... Sweden says its coronavirus approach has worked. The numbers show a different story
Good old CNN. Post a shock headline and finish the article with: "Whether Sweden's Covid-19 strategy has succeeded or failed may not be clear for months to come" Really?!
Let me be completely TTR-relevant for a second... Umm, Sweden also has a high concentration of highly attractive, tall & busty blonde women. Oh, and I suppose guys too, for those of you who are into guys.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. Your opinion is the herd immunity will result in the death rates and cases slowing down in Sweden and the other countries way behind them on lockdown, Norway and Finland for example, will pass them? The current facts are hard to argue with, regardless of CNN reporting them. Your ‘theory’ will be proven or disproven in time. Can I have 2 of your free nights in the penthouse if the Sweden death rate is not passed by both Finland, Denmark and Norway? facts ... The death rate in Sweden has now risen significantly higher than many other countries in Europe, reaching more than 21 per 100,000 people, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University, controlled for population. By contrast, Denmark has recorded more than seven deaths per 100,000 people, and both Norway and Finland less than four. Sweden has registered 18,640 coronavirus cases and 2,194 deaths among its population of 10.3 million people. Denmark has had 8,773 cases and 422 deaths in a population of 5.8 million, Norway 7,449 cases and 202 deaths among its 5.4 million people, and Finland 4,576 cases and 190 deaths in its population of 5.5 million. Denmark and Norway are now beginning to ease their lockdowns, with children returning to school in the past 10 days, in smaller classes with markers to help keep them two meters apart. Salons and other businesses with one-to-one contact will reopen in Norway from Monday. Finland has extended its restrictions until May 13.
I suppose this is a dig at Fox News? There is really no difference between CNN and MSNBC. MSNBC in late January was criticizing Trumps ban on flights from China. They said he was trying to distract the American people from his impeachment. They went as far, as to have guest "experts" come on their show, and say that Corona was not going to be a problem, and in the end wouldn't be any worse than the seasonal flu. At the time anchors were "chirping" about this being a hoax, to have a fair discussion, and not be rooting for your own home team, you must look back and see what the WHO, Dr. Fauci, and were saying, and remember that we didn't even have a dozens deaths back then. Sure hindsight is easy, and fun when you get to criticize someone you don't like, but stopping this virus from spreading wasn't going to happen, no matter what anyone said, did, or didn't do. In all honesty I would love for someone to say what could have been done that would have changed this. How do you test for a disease, with test that hadn't even been invented yet, and that non-symptomatic people can carry? You would literally need to test tens of millions of US citizens per day. That in itself is impossible.
