http://www.wfsb.com/news/10846361/detail.html absolutely sickening God Bless my parents and all you other parents out there for raising your children the right way
Me too. People make jokes about lawyers all the time and how we really never do anything truly "good" for society. In all my years of practice I have had a lot of cases and am very proud of some of the judgements I have gotten my clients. But I think the thing that I have done (and am still doing) that make ME the proudest is volunteering my legal services for free to represent the interests of children who have been the victim of such a crime or have been neglected or abused by their parents. When it's all said and done that is one thing I can say I did that truly made a difference (in a good way) in a child's life.
> People make jokes about lawyers all the time and > how we really never do anything truly "good" for society. > In all my years of practice I have had a lot of cases > and am very proud of some of the judgements > I have gotten my clients. I think that most of the folks who speak ill of lawyers may - in this instance - be referencing the ones which are going to defend these delinquents (speaking of the kids - and their parents).
I'm not going to hide the fact that I do that too. I'm in Court just about everyday representing kids charged with serious crimes. They have a right to representation too. I've had many clients charged with similar crimes. It's part of my job..it's what I do.
Then I'm sure you're aware that there are those of us that feel that rights which are conveyed through the work and dilligence of others needs to be earned, and that the right to representation (and/or any other benefits which a civil society might provide) should come with the responsibility to act in a civil manner. In a moral society, one who disregards that responsibility then, should expect to have given up the rights that come with it. The fact that legal practitioners are willing (even anxious) to provide defense - and perpetuate the consumption of even more resources of civil society to do so - in order to defend those who commit such immoral and undefensible acts - may well account for the level of esteem in which lawyers are held.
Just being born into my particular society guarantees me certain rights. Representation by legal counsel is one of those rights. There is no attachment to the labors or contributions of others except perhaps those who composed the Constitution of my country or those who wrote the laws of the land. Those same lawmakers have the ability to change the nature of certain rights...needing the blessing of the Supreme Court, of course. However, the codes for degree of punishment for offenses, regulation of media, definitions of criminal or willful negligence, etc. are always debated in our society and frequently are subject to change or at least engender proposals for change.
