I looked this up myself last week when someone mentioned you had Monday off work and it was called ' Memorial Day ' as I remembered the abuse that was thrown my way when I asked what Thanksgiving was all about a few years ago on here   . We also had Monday of but this was just classed as a ' Public ' or ' Bank ' holiday and is not given any special reference like yours. Do you lot celebrate rememberance Sunday ( normally the nearest Sunday to November 11th ) which signifies the sighnings of the armistice at the end of WW1 aswell as Memorial day ? Ian.
For Veteran's Day....US http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veterans_Day For Veterans' Day UK, click above link, then click on link at the top to go directly to UK version of Veterans' Day Michelle p.s. Ian....Dunno why folks assume that because we celebrate something here in the states, that the rest of the world should automatically know what it is. Which is why I often will post links regarding the various holidays at times.
probably coz (from my point of view atleast) it seems a little strange that most people celebrate days and have public holidays what we should blatantly be having aswell or some form of alternative - for example, Canadians have Victoria Day - when, last time i looked, Victoria was the queen of england - its pretty common knowledge that we get royally screwed when it comes to public holidays here!
Yeah.....BUT how much vacation/holiday time do you guys get a year. We are lucky to get 1 week AFTER working one year with the company!!! And....some jobs will give you the 1 week off, but it's WITHOUT pay for cryin out loud! So who is REALLY gettin screwed?? Michelle
really, thats shocking! we get a statutory minimum of 24 paid days a year and that incorporates the 8 public holidays too! So good point!
believe me i hardly think you are the ones that are getting screwed out of public holidays. last time i checked you had two bank holidays in may, we had one public holiday, wont have another until july, adn then some people, not all get one in august as well... so yes, while victoria may have been the queen of england, we are still part of commonwealth and have right to celebrate her birthday non?
I think this was changed this years when public / bank holidays were discountered from your statuatory 20 days off a year to stop unsruperlous (sp ! ) employers using your alloted 20 days paid a/l as public / bank holidays. http://www.berr.gov.uk/employment/e...t-guidance/page28978.html#working_time_limits http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/workingtimedirective.htm Pretty lenghthy and in depth Links above that explain the handcuffs our goverment has slapped us into by sighning up to the European work Time Directive as championed by the workshy French and ever so efficient Germans
