    Hey everyone!

So we will be back in Cancun in January and were thinking about which gym to join.. so I was curious what gym you all go or have gone to and how was your experience?

I have been a member of both Total Gym and YEK, Total Gym is a great gym but I found it really expensive especially for men and the people there were so/so. We then joined back at YEK which is my Fiance's old gym and I liked it better but it was a little small and I found that their Cardio machines were often broken which was a little disappointing.. but so far,it's my favourite!

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

    Thanks :D

I'd have to recommend Total Gym, I've been going there for a couple of years now and I find that they're always working to improve the gym every few months (maybe even less than that), I'm sure if you went there today it wouldn't be the same as the last time you went! I normally pay 6 months in advance so I get a cheaper monthly rate, plus if you sign up for the Gold Card you get last year's rates (plus additional discounts at local businesses) - I'd say it's good value for only 200 pesos per year (you save more than that in membership fees alone!).

If you do decide to go feel free to say hi - I'm the only asian guy with a pony tail there... ;)

Also there's a new gym upstairs in Plaza Peninsula on Bonampak (I think it's called LifeFitness), I hear it's quite good and I think membership is cheaper than Total Gym, though I haven't been inside myself. There's another newish one called Forza on Nichupte inside the building next to Plaza Infinity (not sure what the building's called). Membership there is cheaper too but I think the place is smaller than Total Gym. If I were to quit going to Total Gym, I'd probably check out LifeFitness myself.

I went to Yek once because my wife taught Bellydance classes there - signed up for a month, trained there once and never went back lol... The place was just too small and crowded for me.

    Hope that helps! :)

I go to Sport Dreams, it's next to Sam's Club and Walmart Superama, i think the place is called Cumbres or something like that. I signed up last month, no membership fee, 850 pesos a month and it has everything, brand new machines, tons of free weights, classes (included), tons of cardio machines (some with tv's built in), tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pool and boxing equipment, plus some football courts. They also have a decent changing rooms with jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and great showers. It opens at 6 and i think closes at 10 and even open Sundays.

I would recommend it to anyone, although it is a little pricey, I justified it through the no membership and the fact that it has everything i've been looking for in a gym.

If your looking for a good gym that is cheap, you can go to California? It's opposite blockbuster on Uxmal and if you pay in advance, i think they were doing a whole year for 2500 pesos and there is one next to Mercado 23 that has a similar deal.

There is another nice looking gym opposite Sorianna on La Luna i think it is (near where Nichupte and La Luna cross), just above Pescaditos in that little Plaza, sorry I can't remember the name, anyway the gym is called called AnyTime Fitness, no idea of price though.

Otherwise, there is another cheap one near the bridge that crosses over Bonamapak from Lopez Portillo, if you get on the Bonampak and head under the bridge towards Route 4/Punta Sam and then you turn up route 4 and then take the fourth left, then left again, there is a little gym called hercules that opens early and is only 300 a month, cheaper if you pay longer.

Then there is the super fresa Sport City, that costs about $500000 dollars for membership and about $3000 dollars a month, lovely place but it's stupid money, well it was when i checked 3 years ago, sure it's probably more now.

Thanks everyone for your replies!! To be honest I just didn't really like the atmosphere at Total, and the price was just the kicker sort of thing, If we liked it better we would have stayed.. I agree about YEK if you don't have time to go during the day, forget it! So so busy not even a parking space available! I'm going check out all the gyms you both suggested, but I think it's going to be Sports Dreams since it will be right near our apartment!! Thats a pretty fair price for all the amenities so i'll deft be checking it out! :D

    Thanks :)

SamCancun - I am not good at either! I have played them both in the past but am always willing to try! If we do end up joining I will give you a shout! I am an early riser, so that time is no problem :)

CancunScorpio - As much as that is true, I still prefer to join the gym. Great place to make friends and keeps you motivated :)

Oh sure that doesn't sound too bad at all! I was thinking you meant like swimming straight out and back, heading to isla mujeres or something. If i get the time, i might try half of that to begin with.

    You're a professional swimmer? Wow!

Who do you swim for professionally? Does that mean you get paid to swim or sponsored by someone? Do you do the Olympics or what?

I'm interested, I never really thought of people swimming professionally in the same capacity as tennis players or golfers?
