This might be a dumb question but are the duty free allowances the same as a trip to the US? I don't know if it's Canada that makes those rules or the US. Specifically alcohol? Can we take 1L of alcohol per person?

I have brought back large bottles (40 oz) and have never been asked to pay after declaring them. 1 per person
If you go over just declare it. We always get more alcohol than the limit but we declare it. We have never had a problem or paid duty. Most times we are travelling with our 2 young children and they just look at the kids and say "You are going to need it"....lol.
Actually honesty is the best way to go...any time we have been over on the alcohol and claimed it at some point in the customs process they said "Have a nice day" and we carried on duty / GST free. This is only a bit over btw, not like 3 litres over.
