I may be trying to buy a scooter/motorbike, new or used, in the Mayan Riviera this winter - if the ownership and licensing laws aren't too hard to fathom. Does anyone know what they are?

    motorcycle/scooter

I bought a new motorcycle the first part of Oct,-for buying new- I had to show my papers..passport-FM2-waterbill-or something that shows residence-Went to licensing place-with bike and papers showing I bought it-they then made a copy of serial numbers I went back inside, and paid for license[plates] thru dec, will pay for full yr in Jan- also you do need a "motorcycle indorsement" along with your regular drivers license-for me- I have a regular mex. drivers license for auto plus an additional one for motorcycle- go to drivers license place and for small fee its yours- if you already have an indorsement on your [home country] license-your good to go -Hope this helps!

Thanks bt. I neglected to mention that I don't have a Mx. drivers' license, just one for my Canadian province. And, I don't have a motorbike endorsement on it. Do I need a CAR Mx. drivers' license before I can get a moto license? Is there a motorbike driving test?

I know you can rent a scooter with just a regular license from Canada.

Perhaps others will show up but after a breif web search I came up with this rival site: http://intheroo.com/forum/locals-talk/5332-buying-mexican-motorcycle.html

Thanks for directing me there! Wow, that is much appreciated! And yet I still don't know the answer to one thing: do I need to pass a test that says I'm capable of riding a motorbike - and if, so what is the procedure?

No you do not have to take a test- just go in- pay the fee for a bike license, and you are good to go

Someone else might know but if in doubt these guys will know

Secretaría General Seguridad Pública y Tránsito
    Avenida Xcaret SN
Supermanzana 21, 77508 Benito Juárez, Quintana Roo, Mexico

    01 998 884 0710

In playa intheroo describes the office as "This is the Solidaridad Department of Public Safety and City Transit. Among other things, this is where you can pay your traffic ticket and apply for a drivers license. "
