Watch Out for Telcel / Wahuu Scam + MundoMM too

Telcel SEEMINGLY has a new way to rip you off and they got me. I started getting text messages about once a week from Wahuu, whatever that is. Thinking nothing about it, I just deleted them.

In checking my bill (I have a plan) there was $130 on my current bill. I went back and in Nov it was $52 or so and in Dec it was $104 or so.

I now have this unsubscribed but it is like $26.?? to RECEIVE one of these messages. It read as "Suscri Sem" on my bill. Well, I did not 'Suscri" to this type of thing.

TELCEL SAYS THAT THEY WILL NOT CREDIT THESE B.S. CHARGES, THAT I MUST HAVE SUBSCRIBED TO THIS, WHICH I TOLD THEM I DID NOT. THEY THEN TOLD ME THAT PERHAPS SOMEONE ELSE ACCIDENTALLY USED MY NUMBER TO SUBSCRIBE AND JUST MIXED UP THE KEYS. (RIGHT ! ! !)

I asked them what was their affiliation with WAHOO. Guess what - They don't own them but they rent them like a 4 digit text message number, 2626 for example as I was told. I asked them who was getting the money that I had paid and was expected to pay to Telcel. A big surprise - Telcel gets my damn money but cannot refund/credit me. I wrote a letter of protest and the semi mgr lady I had worked my way up to, told me that she would hand deliver it to someone, whose name I have, regarding my request for a credit. I must say that the original person I spoke with, and the semi mgr lady, Sandra were polite and professional. They just said they were unable to credit/refund my money. I got to Sandra by asking the first lady, "then who can?". When Sandra could not, she told me this Cesar whatever and said that I could write him a letter of protest, which I did.

There were no charges except for the last two bills and the current one.

I suggest that if you are on a plan, look at ALL of the charges on your bill. If you use the Amigo card, you may have already been screwed if you received a text from Wahuu.

We have all heard that Telcel wants to charge us for unanswered and missed calls since they are doing their job of connecting the caller to callee. Looks like they may have found another revenue service by accidentally subscribing customers to a service offered by one of their corporate customers, from whom they make money, then allow unsuspecting customers to get whacked for an outrageous fee.

    Any ideas?
    Experience with this Wahoo thing?

I think I will go back and see this Cesar guy and tell him I want my account credited $286 or whatever, on the spot or that I would be on my way to Profeco. Anyone care to join me? Been there; done that. Right Sergio Pilati?

Thanks for the headsup, T.J. I checked my inbox and, so far, it looks like I haven't benn hit (Amigo Plan).

This reminds me of the time I got money from an ATM at Bancomer: my bank hit me with two charges, the normal fee, of about $5 and another fee they claimed to only be collecting as an agent for Bancomer- which they could not credit, and suggested I contact Visa, who disavowed all knowledge. After an hour on the phone, dealing with indifferent people, I gave up, the $13.50 or so extra I was charged not being worth the time I was putting into it.

I don't use ATMs at Bancomer any more.

This kind of BS is why I switched over to Movistar a few years ago :)

Thanks for the heads up, and I hope everything gets fixed, TJ!

V - I can't say 100%, but I really doubt it. Each company has different SMS chips that only work in their cell phones. When I switched to Movistar, I had to get a new number, a new chip and a new phone. (If I try to use my Movistar chip in a Telcel phone, it won't read it.)

When you buy a phone with Movistar, they give you the SMS chip and number for free.

    T.J!

I will have a look at my bill next time I go in and pay it! I am always curious as to why my bill is always different, but haven't paid much attention as I travel so much I figured this was the reason.

Last time I was in Canada I didn't keep my phone on for more than 10 minutes - I still ended up with ridiculous roaming charges....

In your situation it's a shame (pathetic). Sandra and/or the semi mgr should have the autonomy to credit these charges back. Like really.....

I am totally unhappy with Movistar, don't make the change, lol! Telcel has much better coverage and service, really. I'm actually considering paying the price to cancel my contract and switch back to Telcel.

When I changed, they said I could keep my Telcel number, but I would have had to wait an extra ten days (read: who knows how long) for my service to kick in.

    It gets better

A friend told me today of her problem with Telcel.

She miraculously has been getting text messages from MUNDOMM and found charges on her bill. When questioned, Telcel told her she must have subscribed. Her most recent message was today. They told her she had to go to the Mundo to mm website to unsubscribe.

Im assuming all this is if one has a plan?

(I have the regular "credit refill" thingy.)

Best of luck T.J. - hope it can be solved somehow.

Rawkus. I would not necessarily make that assumption. It would be easier to scam you if you did nor have a bill to review. Like do you have a clue a to how your credit gets used up? I would just be on the lookout for strange incoming text messages that could be eating up you're credits at $ 28 per whack.
