My wife has been getting reports from her work from military spouses that the drug cartel violence is spreading into Cancun and that some military personnel are suggesting to avoid Cancun at this time. I just had a coworker get back from there and said all was good. I've also done a bit of searching and not found any official US reports advising against travel to Cancun.

I'm curious if anyone here has heard/read of anything of the sort. We have time to make alternate arrangements if need be but don't want to wait too long. I have an email into a friend of a friend who works for the US feds in a security role who should be able to fill in any voids the media is/isn't telling us.

    Anyone's advice is welcome!

Nothing out of the ordinary here, that I'm aware of. For tourists things seem to continue as safe as can be.

My advice is to take the advice of those that you know that were just here and said everything is fine. Also, use the search option and read everything listed on here from the locals and the tourist that have been here recently. Also, do a search on sensationalist journalism in the good ol' US of A.
I am at wits end with all this bull sh*t news about Cancun. So glad my family doesn't get on me about living here. I could say soo much more, but I am gonna bite my tongue.

I would personally agree that much of it is sensationalized media. I mean sh*t, people get killed every few days here in good ole' Salt Lake City and you don't see people avoiding going to those towns. I mean if there are legitimate concerns that's one thing but at this point, I can't find one thing that would cause me to be personally concerned about travel there.

Geez, only every few days...I grew up in Philly and atleast three ppl get killed by gunfire a day there, on average. It's the first thing I look at when I wake up everyday and thank my lucky star that I am here and not there.

Not to mention you don't have to deal with the snow or cold :)

As far as I am concerned just take the same precautions you would at home. Don't walk down dark alleys late at night in bad areas of town, don't wander into a locals bar and act like a jerk be courteous and all should be fine!

Thanks guys! I've spent the last 2 hours looking through news reports and through the US Gov't travel site and there is nothing there that would alarm me personally. Heck, I don't go to downtown SLC at night so why would I do that in Cancun anyway!

BTW - Absolutely LOVE the Livergeddon comment on your count down ticker....awesome!

I live in downtown Cancun, as do most of the expats on here, and it is fine too. Cancun as a whole is safe if you listen to Canadian XX fan's advice. I walk around downtown by myself and different hours and have had no problems. Don't stay in the Hotel Zone the entire time, you might as well go to the Gulf side of FL if you do.

I really don't want to stay in the zone the entire week unless that's what makes the wife feel more comfortable. I told her that worse case if we don't go into town, we'll head to Isla M and party/shop there. Personally, I want to hit Market 23/28 and check out the deals and steals there.
