Out of curiousity, I wanted to see if I could find out what country in the world was the most dangerous for Americans & Canadians to travel to. I searched all over the internet looking for statistics/data and when I ran across a US Government page, and scrolled down to compare Mexico with several other countries I've visited or would like to visit one day......I just about cried when I saw how many un-natural deaths occurred in Mexico compared to most all of the other countries listed.

I'm sure most of you will be absolutely floored to see the numbers. It's so high, I have to wonder about the accuracy of the numbers........

I have to wonder about the accuracy of the numbers as well Michelle. Just out of curiousity I went to Stats Canada site and only searched for homicides. This is what I found...
There were 27 traffic fatalities in my city alone last year.
According to the US Government page there were 29 (un-natural) deaths for all of Canada last year, listing homicides & traffic fatalities as 2 of the causes.
So looks to me they are not even slightly accurate unless I'm reading something wrong.

    Just my 2 pesoss worth

I believe that those statistics are for U.S. Citizens who were abroad and met an untimely, un-natural death outside of the United States. So those 29 would not include Canadians, just Americans that may have been killed in your city.

There are quite a few for Mexico but you also have to realize that being one of our neighbors and having many individuals here in the States that were naturally born in Mexico, I can see why. Having said that... I doubt very seriously if I will be visiting Nuevo Laredo any time soon. We used to go there quite a bit when I lived in San Antonio. My, my... how times have changed.

I agree. I think that the numbers don't reflect the percentage of visitors that meet an untimely death. Mexico has a lot of U.S. visitors every year so naturally their number of deaths is inordinately larger.

There were only a dozen or so U.S. deaths in Argentina. I just got back from there on Thursday and feel safer in Mexico than Argentina. There are just not many Americans that visit Argentina.

The list is not 100% accurate because there are two homicides that happened in Feb. 2006 and they are not on the list.
I was at the hotel when it happened so I know the date.

The list might actually be longer, who knows.

I'm not sure it is all that alarming.

As mentioned, when you consider the huge number of US tourists that visit Mexico a deaths per million visitors ratio would, I'm sure, paint a different picture.

I looked at the Cancun deaths in particular:
    Drowning 13
    Suicide 2
    Vehicle Accident 4
    Other Accident (Falls etc) 2
    Drugs Related 2

So, approximately one per month and not a single homicide (according to the stats published). I'd bet alcohol and/or drugs played a part in some of the drownings and accidents too skewing them higher.

I believe that those individuals were actually Canadians. Wasn't that the couple that was in Riveria Maya for their daughter's wedding?

That was another thing that I found interesting was the types of deaths for particular areas. You just knew that drowning was going to be the major cause of deaths in French Polynesia and other exotic beach locales. Just as drug related deaths made up the majority (barely) of deaths in the Netherlands (Amsterdam had 5 deaths, four were drug related).

Yes, that was the couple. I thought the list was of travelers to that region. Sorry ~ didn't know that it was just U.S.A folks.

I'll tell you what - just hope nothing ever happens to us while we are down there cause they will have that crime scene cleaned up so fast that there is no way a thorough investigation can be done. They did not even question quests. The staff that could speak english suddenly spoke no english. They just tried to act like nothing happened.
Most of the guests just thought that someone had a heart attack.
