We're on Altell and had no problems calling home in September. Should be the same plan with Verizon. Think it was like 75 cents a minute. Not cheap but very convenient for checking in with the kids.

Verizon will work just fine. You should have no problems at all.

I use a BlackBerry 9630 through Verizon and I have used it for both phone and internet (tethered to laptop as wireless modem) without an issue. Probably also depends on your wireless "plan".
The phone should certainly work and the resort has Wi-Fi available although it isn't cheap; around $5 US per 30 minutes, I think.
I believe you can find the more exact pricing either on the TTR website or in other postings on CancunCare.

I have verizon and was told not to make calls or answer the phone because it would cost a lot. They suggested I use the texting service for 25 cents per text. worked fine.

Wifi is $20 per day and I did not get reception in my room. Had to go to courtyard or lobby to get reception. $5 per half hour is to use their computers in the lobby.

It must be dependent upon your voice and/or data plan then. I have a Global BlackBerry plan with unlimited text and data so I saw no additional charges. (Of course, that plan isn't cheap in its own right but I need it for work.) Calling your provider. i.e. Verizon, AT&T, etc. is probably the smartest idea as they can tell you the charges based on your existing plan.
