We are going Nov 14-20 for the first time. Should we get any vaccines/meds before we go? My doc recommended some meds to avoid upset stomach and some antibiotics if the other stuff doesn’t cut it. He also recommeneds a Hep A shot. Anyone else bring meds or get vaccinated? I’m worried because we don’t normally take anything stronger than OTC. And the last time I took an antibiotic was like 10+ years ago. I don’t want it to crash my system. Idk, maybe probiotics....?
Lots of people take probiotics. We have been going to Mexico for years and have never had a vaccine. We have had the occasional minor stomach issue but that may have something to do with the amount of alcohol we drink there too
Umm...get the vaccine...not a big deal. As for the antibiotic...probably not a bad idea to take with you, hopefully he's not pushing you to take it before you get sick. I bring Pepto with me any time I travel to a country that might cause stomach issues...but other than that you'll probably be fine. Especially if you stay at the resort and are not eating random street food.
Hi! No my doc is great, he knows me really well. He said the antibiotic is “just in case”. I was thinking of bringing these as well as the normal travel arsenal and starting probiotics/prebiotics probably in the next week or 2 to get a heartier resistance lol.
Was advised before first trip to get vaccines for Hep A and dengue. Got the shots, but honestly I think this is advice in general for travelling in Mexico. Cancun hotel zone is very different than travelling across say rural Mexico, so I haven't bothered with the shots since. This may be a controversial opinion. Why do people take antibiotics as preventative medicine? Antibiotic resistance and prevalence of super bugs is a very real issue across the world that is getting worse because people (and farming industry) use antibiotics excessively. Here in the UK, you have to really need them to have antibiotics prescribed. I find it pretty bizarre how people talk about taking antibiotics when there's no infection or virus present, but take it as a 'just in case' scenario.

Hopefully someone can answer...seems to work the same in the UK as it does in Canada. I will only take antibiotics if absolutely 100% necessary. Nikki
Thanks everyone, I feel better with the advice. I think I’ll pass as far as the vaccine since we aren’t even leaving the resort. I’ll stick with some otc meds and a probiotic regiment which is good to do in any case, in my opinion. Antibiotics, I totally agree. They are over prescribed. I haven’t taken an antibiotic in over 10+ years, that’s why I was bit surprised when he offered one, even as a “just in case” scenario. My doc knows I don’t like to take them. I’ll bring it in case something more serious happens, but I doubt I’ll need it. And what is the “green juice” at the resort that I’ve read about?
If you do get sick, pharmacy across the street has a doctor available and will get you meds or antibiotic if needed. (pain killers, antibiotics...viagra if needed!) The Mrs here lost her voice and caught something like laryngitis on our last trip. We were advised by other guests to go across the street and to cross check online for what they prescribed. Everything they prescribed was perfect and price was fair. We booked an appointment with our doctor for when we got back and she said to just keep on with what they gave us. So, very reassuring for future trips.
Our doctor or pharmacist always give us a prescription (which we fill) for antibiotics before we leave the country "just in case" we NEED them. Only once on a trip to Cuba did one of my kids need to take it. Personally I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Yeah probiotics is definitely a good idea, although depending how much you drink it'll be wiped out after a few days! The green juice is amazing. I'm assuming it has something like kale or spinach as the base, and tastes like they've added orange and lemon. Great for hangovers, feels like it's replenishing lost vitamins from all the drinking. Also that's a good point re antibiotics. When you take an antibiotic, it wipes out all bacteria, even the good ones that you need in your body for healthy gut etc. so if anyone did need to take them, try to replenish the good bacteria with probiotics and the green juice!
