I will be arriving in May and wll be renting a vehicle and was wondering if I should bring my gps? I would have to purchase a mexico map but was wondering if it's worth it. I will be drivng from the airport to playa for a couple of days and then staying in Cancun. I will be going to walmart and few other sites and want to get there without getting or looking lost lol.... Any help would be appreciated.
I think you will have trouble finding a map for this area of Mexico. There is no way to get lost driving to Playa, or to Walmart, with proper directions. The GPS will actually work but, for the most part, not correctly. The roads can be seen but they don't line up correctly. For example, driving to Merida from Cancun it is pretty much a due west heading. But the highway appears on the GPS off to the north. I have been traveling a lot between these cities and I have saved the locations into my Favorites. I do know the exact distance to the toll booths and service plaza (restrooms-lol) but this is the only way you can find something for the most part. I use mine to break up the monotony of the trip. If on the bus I take it just to see where I am. Normally, during the day, you could look out the window and see km markers, etc. The Platino (Platinum) class bus has a curtain that blocks passengers from seeing out the front window. And you cannot plug in an address. They are weird here. My advice is that you will not need or use it, so why risk it getting lost, stolen or damaged.
