From several papers...results of a big meeting yesterday.

1.- They are forming a "Commission" to "exhort" the owner of the grand Caribe Real and The Royal Hotel to remove his illegally built artificial structure of sand and rocks on the beach within 9 days so as not to slow down the beach project. BUT nothing will stop the process and if he doesn't remove it, they will just go ahead and pump sand over it and move on! (The logical thing to do anyway IMHO.) That is what the Secretary of Tourism said BUT the Governor says that if it is not removed they will NOT do the beach in front of those hotels and just skip that area and start down by Punta Nizuc (Club Med area but not the first 900 meters.). So the soap opera of egos continues.

2.- Affirmed that there is no legal reason why they can't start using sand from the Cozumel sand bank.

3.- They have so far extracted about 750,000 cubic meters of sand--50% of the 1.5 million permitted.

4.- They are figuring that the whole project of CAncun and Playa del Carmen at least should finish by February 2010 and maybe Cozumel...it depends how they behave!! (Aunque dejó entrever la posibilidad de no contemplar a Cozumel, porque todo depende de “cómo se comporte”.)

5.- Announced that the work will be monitored by independent third-party agencies in the matter of the environment, the Mexican Academy of Environmental Law and the International Environmental Court. (Academia Mexicana de Derecho Ambiental y de la Corte Internacional de Arbitraje y Conciliación Ambiental.)

    More as it is reported.
