Hi Everyone, We are regulars at TTR, but since our last trip, I have been diagnosed as celiac. It’s been a long road to get well again, but I have finally got it sorted. However, I am panicking about our upcoming trip! Cross contamination, is my biggest problem... Can anybody else relate to this and give me some guidance on safe places to eat?
Chris is also gluten allergic. She lets them know when she goes into each restaurant. Talk to the Captain and the chef and they will take care of you. It's possible to eat at all the restaurants. You can also stop by restaurants the day before and talk to the captain and if they have warning they can modify just about any dish to be gluten free... they just need warning.. we gave them 24 hours and never had a problem getting like the sweet and sour pork dish. Thank you for your reply. I was starting to panic that I would need to bring my own food at things! I will follow your advice... Thanks, Claire
Bumping this, for more replies... as I don’t want to publish my health issues, on the Facebook page...
At each restaurant they will ask you if you have any food allergies. I cannot recall them not asking. Therefore, I am sure they have ways and methods to avoid cross contamination. At the buffet be sure to check with hostess and manager on duty.
I am gluten sensitive and did not have an issue. As previously said, each restaurant we ate at asked if there were any allergy issues. Also, the buffet has gluten free options. If you are unsure of something, just ask. The staff is super helpful!
If you are worried about the buffet, you can always have breakfast at Sea Flirt which is a sit down meal where you order from a menu. I really enjoy eating there as the food is excellent and it is very relaxing and it is much quieter then the buffet.
She is allergic to wheat so when we went they were always very accommodating. She also took some of her own rice pasta which they were more than happy to cook for her and make something with . She also kept some in the fridge in the room to mix in with salads etc . Its easy they want to please you and will accommodate you .
Thank you for your replies... I understand that they can accommodate dietary needs, but a simple crumb, can actually make me really sick. Any ideas how to convey this to them?
Chris stressed cross contamination when she talked to them. Basically told them that even cooking on the same grill could cause her to get sick. They got it and took her selection from the buffet, for example, in the back to cook in a clean pan. If you talk to them, they get it and will do everything you need to have done. Be polite, but be persistent if you need to be. The chefs understand and will go above and beyond... honestly I have more trust in them going back to the kitchen to fix stuff than in the States. They drill their folks when most restaurants in the states do not. Jamie
