Hi there tobycat. You will find your time in Tulum extremely relaxing. If you have not been to Tulum before I am sure you will find it slow the first week, and the 2nd week you will get the hang of things.

Tulum is relatively small, and if you bar hop at random you won't find much going on. However once you make friends with some of the locals they will start guiding you as to where the "hot spot" will be each night. For example Sundays most everyone goes to La Zebra for salsa night. Friday's most people end up at Mezzaninies.

If you want to minggle with some very interesting people, make your way over to Playa Esperanza, the one on the way to Sian Kaan reserve. Ask for Neto and tell him Manny says hello. This is the camp ground where most traveling artisans end up at. You can take a couple of beers with you and mingle with the people there, more than likely you will meet some very interesting people, and might be able to buy some nice hand made crafts, some are very skilled at what they do. Also feel free to ask if they plan to play with fire at night, since many of them are also acrobats and jugglers. You can see some kewl pictures taken at the camp site here http://picasaweb.google.com/CancunWithMe1/PlayingWithFireInTulum# and here http://picasaweb.google.com/CancunWithMe1/MalabaresInTulum#

As far as places to eat besides the restaurants at the cabins I can recommend Don Cafeto in the middle of town, and Urge Taquito for the best fish and shrimp tacos. Urge Taquito is on the outskirts of town between Tulum Ruins and Tulum town, but much closer to Tulum town.

Also, there are many small cenotes in the area, ask the locals if they could please point you out to some. Neto knows of a hand full of them, and if Neto is not at Playa Esperanza when you stop by, then go next door to Playa Mambo, and ask for Javier, he knows where some are. These folks are very friendly, and if you offer them a beer or two, or a small tip they might even walk/go with you to these different cenotes
