we are planning a return trip in October, thinking about spending a couple of days in Belize before returning home. We are considering moving to the Belize area for good within next 10 yrs so we should spend a whole week there but being so close to The fun at TTR and not being part of it would kill us. Question, what travel options are there for thise that are in the know? We found flights taking 1hr 15min but little concerend will be a well worn out DC-9, we are not going to find United offering flights I am sure. Bus is out of the question, 5 plus hours Is what Erin found this am I think. Thanks all
Just as a FYI - The only direct flights at moment that I'm aware of is one daily flight via Tropic Air. Very expensive though at about $250 per person one way. Tropic uses Cessna 208Bs or Gippsland GA8 Airvans, basically small light aircraft You might be able to do a flight via Miami or a charter but either would also be expensive. The only current inexpensive way that I know of is the ADO bus.
In which part of Belize will you be staying? Stacia wanted to go there next February instead of TTR (*gasp*) because it was COLD both of the last 2 years we were there in February. Being farther south, I "hope" it's warmer there, otherwise, it might be Rio, and go get a roll in at a Gracia school.
How familiar are you with the current hazards of traveling to Belize, much less permanently living there? Think parts of Mexico aren't safe, you haven't seen anything yet. Belize is one of the most beautiful places on earth, but it is also one of the most dangerous by A LOT. And unlike Mexico where the majority of the government and police are straight forward, in Belize I would feel safer in a gang than being shaken down for money alone by locals officials. This is no joke, and I hope you thoroughly investigate before going. In Belize, you truly are on your own.
Isn't there the one island section which is almost completely separate from the rest? Of course, what happens if you just happen to be there During The Revolution! Oops...
thanks all, San Pedro is the bottom end of the barrier island that is the major resort of Belize though when when/if we go this yr we would want to see the areas where we would purchase a home. Stacia/John, cold last Fed? wow we must be easy to please, we were at TTR the second week of Feb and never went below 82 during the day and being naked on the beach ( and practically completely in Patty-O's and on completely the beds in common area behind 5000 bldng nitely on way back to room) was never a problem! Oct is as long as we want to wait, just hope its deep enough into H season, then back again next Feb.. CJ no disrespect though your pov is a little on the pessimistic side. Sure Belize City is not where you want to live or spend time at night, there arent packs of roving bandits roaming the neighborhood. we are likely headed towards a gated community which sounds like a growing trend. Its a ten yr plan, maybe by then they will allow us to pack heavy and protect ourselves.. and besides, if we live that close to TTR we wouldnt actually be in Belize that often anyways!
Don't kid yourselves - your more likely to see a revolution HERE in the US by then!!! See you in Belize before you know it!
I would agree that if I had to live there, a gated community would be a must. But you can't stay within those walls forever. Ex-pats are regularly the target of crime when going to town for supplies, fun, etc. I would highly recommend getting on some ex-pat or Belize forums and read from the people living with these difficulties. It's nothing to joke about.
