Leaving in a week and beginning to get worried, we have just read some reports about a tropical storm in the area, as well as alerts regarding very thick mosquitos - and nearly 100 people contracting Dengue Fever...is it safe to come, we are so excited, then we heard the above and are a bit worried????
We would love to hear from somebody who is there. We just heard about this stuff from a couple that just returned, they were not staying at Temptations, but were close by. They said they could not even sit at the pool, because of the mosquitos, it dominated the entire trip. Right now they are both really sick with Dengue Fever:icon_sad: They just returned two days ago, so getting an up to date would help a lot, we go next week!!!
That seems so weird, I have never seen a mosquito in all the times I've been to Cancun. It's always so windy they wouldn't be able to navigate very well.
As we enter the hurricane season the weather becomes more of a concern but that is the risk you take this time of year. This is one reason prices are cheaper now as opposed to Feb-Mar. Rarely are mosquitos an issue though I know on occasion they have been known to be a little pesky. IMO you are getting a little paranoid over things out of your control. Buy trip insurance & take insect repelant & go and have yourself a great vacation!! :ernaehrung015:
While I'm not in Cancun at the moment, we left last week for a month vacation, I have lived there for 7 years now. Tropical Storms: As NTBaby says, it's a risk at this time of year. There was a tropical storm earlier this week but it was about 50 miles from Cancun and just caused a rainy day, the next day the weather was perfect. Winds never got above 20mph in Cancun. Dengue Fever: It can happen but outbreaks are uncommon. When it does happen it's usually confined to poor downtown areas where there is no mosquito control. In the hotel zone and nicer parts of downtown spraying is carried out regularly for mosquitos. Mosquitos: As mentioned spraying usually eradicates the problem sufficiently but from time to time, especially a few days after heavy rain, you may see and be bitten by mosquitos. I live downtown and would say I've probably been bitten about 4 times this year, it's not something to get overly concerned about. Cancun is in the tropics, and in the tropics you may encounter tropical storms, tropical diseases and tropical insects. Just part and parcel of any tropical destintation. Try not to worry too much and I'm sure you'll have a great vacation next week.
We are just at the airport heading home, no Mosquitos and no Denque Fever! it rained all day Wednesday that was all. So go and have fun
Thank you everybody for easing our mind, we are so excited we can barely contain ourselves, then my wife goes to work and hears a horror story from a co-worker that just returned.... I have no idea where they were staying or what excursions they went on etc... so we are not going to worry about it, thank you all for easing our minds!!!!!!
When we went in 2009, we arrived to messages on our room phone from my sister warning us about the swine flu epidemic in Mexico. She warned us to stay away from crowds. Yeah right. Temptation on vacation in Cancun and we're going to avoid crowds. It was all the talk all week, but we never ran into a case of Swine Flu until we got back to the USA - go figure. Screening at the airport, everything, but never saw one case. Go, have fun.
