How exactly does it work? When we booked last time, Orbitz said we could add it later at anytime. Is there a pro-rated scale then, for what you pay? Has anyone used it? We are 50/50 on a trip at the end of Oct., but with a very special needs child, sitters will be harder to come by at that time. We have gone during Thanksgiving break in the past.
When we booked (last two times through Orbitz) they made it seem like we had to get insurance then and there while booking. I think the insurance price goes by the overall cost of your trip? We got it this trip and last trip too. Figure it is worth the peace of mind for the $100 some odd dollars even if we never use it. We have a daughter with a bad nut allergy and who seems like she is constantly sick...that insurance makes us feel like we can relax more while on vacation!
Make sure you get the right kind of trip insurance...I think most of the cheaper/basic insurance doesn't cover cancellation for just any reason...it only covers for cancellation from weather, loss of job, etc. And you can purchase trip insurance from a ton of companies...it doesn't have to purchased from whoever you book through. It can normally be added on just about anytime before you travel.
That's great if your a member...we are looking for a solution that doesn't require a membership. Jeff
Most Insurance,s DO NOT cover pre-existing conditions.... buying it does not mean your covered, a lot of fine print. Hope you have a great time
You might try a different method than relying on a travel ins company approving your claim. You could try buying the trip in two parts to help hedge against the amount of out of pocket you may have to eat. Note - I have never booked a vacation this way, it was just an idea that came up from some past experience with business travel and some chatter from airline pilots I know. If you book your room through Hotels.com, they typically let you cancel the rooms up to a day before you stay without penalty. There may be other sites that have this same policy for rooms, be sure of the cancellation terms before you book. (will they credit you back or do you have to use a future credit etc). Airfare is another issue. I am not aware of any airlines that would credit you fully back for any seat you weren't able to use. Maybe someone else can chime in. Most charge $100 to $200 per person to change any reservation in my experience. I have heard that a common trick that business travelers use, is to buy a ticket on Southwest to use as a backup to their other travel plans. If their other plans go off without trouble, they cancel the southwest ticket and then re-use the credit on their next leg where they may need another backup. Southwest just recently started offering service to Cancun. The schedules aren't as good as some of the other majors, but just throwing out ideas for you. There is a link here that talks about how to avoid change fees. Maybe one of the other airlines might work better for you. My one and only experience with travel insurance was that the paperwork was not worth the time to get reimbursed for the additional expenses we had on a trip where Continental left us standing at the gate due to them filling the plane with extra air crew who needed to get to Houston..... I would imagine that trying to claim on a childcare issue might be a tough one. Others might know better, but travel insurance might only cover the change fees, deposits and unused room charges if anything. You would still end up with the airline credit and possibly a hotel room website credit that you need to use in the future.
I think where trip insurance really makes a lot of sense is covering injuries, etc. while you're in Mexico...but as Donald has said - you really need to check what the policies you're looking at will cover.
we used www.squaremouth.com someone on hear recommend it so i looked at it there are alot of plans to choose from and cost is accordingly to what you choose
Totally understand. If you qualify for membership based on service in military or any family members service the membership is free and worth it for other products offered as well. PM me if you need any help with it. Ian
