I am wanting some thoughts on my situation. I normally book my flight, hotel, and transfers through Vacation Express, which I love, but this time around doing things differently. I am using a friends referral week so they are booking the room for me and I am booking my flight only through Vacation Express. We have a non-stop flight. Should I purchase extra insurance for the flight? I normally purchase the Air and Land Plus when I book all together but didn't know if should this time as well.

    Appreciate all opinions and thoughts!

Book some travel insurance - it cost way too much not to have it if you need it. Trust me - i travel all over the world bringing folks home who have medical issues while on vacation

When you say trip insurance, does that mean trip cancellation insurance? If you go without the insurance, what would happen if you cancelled the flight? Most discount airfare is non refundable, but you can use value of ticket plus a change fee on another flight with in 12 months. So if you anticipate travelling any where that airline flies within 12 months you are really only out the change fee.

If I cancelled the flight for any reason that was covered I would be refunded 100%, less the insurance amount, in the form of payment I gave them. If I canceled for an uncovered reason, I would be refunded 75%. It is an additional 120.00 per person. I do a payment plan so it does say it cant be purchased after the trip paid in full so may be I book it then purchase it later before I pay if I change my mind...........hmmmmm but since I am only booking the flight through them and not the whole vacation like I normally do, it would only cover the flight, not my hotel since I am booking hotel directly.

Try Travelguard. They are an independent provider and it makes no difference where any of the trip is booked. We have used them several times, but fortunately we have never needed to make a claim.

I was curious if it was worth getting travel insurance months after booking? I booked in April & I'm not sure if it would cover a full refund if I had to cancel since I'm purchasing insurance so late. Anyone have any info on that? I've never had to get travel insurance, but I'm going in Sept during hurricane season and want to be prepared. Thanks in advance!

We purchase travel insurance for any trip outside travel within the continental US. From our perspective, it's just part of the budget/expenses when booking the trip.

Trip insurance is a must! I am also looking into some type of medical insurance as well. Our recent trip in June we saw a young lady fall and break her leg. She was sent to the hospital and being from the states her medical insurance was not accepted. $10000 later spread out over multiple credit cards she was treated.

I definitely recommend buying trip insurance that covers medical. Our first trip to Cancun (not at TTR) both my wife and I had ended up with separate trips to the Hospiten in Mexico. The do not take medical insurance in Mexico so gotta pay cash or credit card. It was roughly a total of $1500 for both visits. I submitted the claim to trip insurance company and they promptly paid 100%. The bonus for us is I also submitted the claim to my health insurance in the US from work and also paid the claim so that worked in our favor. Personally I would definitely have some additional coverage!

Trip Cancellation and medical insurance are a must in my books...especially medical. Never had to use the medical but had to use trip cancellation once. Worth every penny. 10 Day vacation @ $1500 per person is about $220-240 for both

You usually have to get the insurance within 5 days of purchasing your trip, at least in Canada you do.
