Hi from B.C. Just wondering about the availability of car rentals ,motorcycle (Harley) rentals and tours . We are going to Cancun on the 28 of november and were thinking of taking our chances on things like renting a harley for a couple of days without advance booking. Is this a good idea or a very dumb idea ? Myekun

You wont have any problem with availability, November is one of the quieter times of year.

There is an advantage in booking ahead though, especially for tours I would say. You will often find much better prices online than you will find once at the resort. Once you're at your hotel you'll have little option but to book with the hotels tour provider of choice. Booking online gives you more options at better prices and a point of contact both before and after your trip.

Online businesses are made or broken by their reputation and because of that strive to give a far higher standard of customer service, than say Pedro who is paid a pittance to sit in the hotel lobby every day and knows he'll never see you again once you go home.

What Steve answered is a good rule of thumb, but there are some tours you might get a better deal booking while you are down here. For example Jet ski rentals, you might get a better deal by showing up with the actual operator and making them an offer, vs pre booking online, this also applies to snorkeling tours in Isla Mujeres, ATV tours etc.

You mentioned you would like to rent some bikes while down here, which means you can provide your transportation to the tour sites. If you see a tour that provides rates that include "pick up" only ask the seller where you would have to go to if you didn't want pick up, and if the price would drop a bit without pickup. Once you know the location you could take a risk and just show up at the meeting site without reservations, and make the actual tour provider an offer. The risk is that the tour might have filled up (but doubtful as slow as things are now)

Tours to parks Xcaret and location specific activities like swim with dolphins will not accept "offers" for those type of tours, their prices are set at the door, so you are better off pre booking those types of tours.

Also, there are many neat places you can drive/ride yourself to that most bus load tours (non-private tours) won't take you to. Being that Harleys appeal to you, I am confident you would really enjoy spending some time hanging out in Tulum cabins area. Locals there are very friendly, and can suggest different spots for you guys to ride out to, to swim on some neat almost virgin cenotes.

Good information thank you Manny. We aren't sure about renting a bike yet as we are new to your area. If we can team up with another couple or so that might be interested in a day or two cruise of the area we probably would feel a little more comfortable. We are kind of laid back and believe things happen the way they are supposed to without excessive planning :) . Saying that, being a little prepared doesn't hurt. So thanks again for the info.
