So, it's coming up pretty quick, 5 more days until we're there! Wondering how much we should bring for tipping around the resort? USD? CAD? Pesos? Which is preferred? Thanks!
There are different theories on this. Some give a bunch at certain times or dollar per drink. We bring a card and a 20 for the maid for the week. We leave 3-5 dollars for breakfast/lunch and 10 at dinner. We tip the bartenders 10-20 dollars per day. Breaking bills is time consuming at TTR so we bring lots of small bills. Hope that helps.
We usually tip in US dollars because it is easiest for us. However, you should look at tipping from the perspective of the staff. I am sure american dollars are not as easy to spend as the native pesos are. I also notice that many times when spending US currency in shops, the fee for the currency exchange from USD to Pesos can be high. Something the staff members will have address when they spend the US dollars. We tip in US currency because it easiest for us. We make up for the perils of tipping in US dollars to the staff by tipping WELL!
I don't think it matters. Generally the best conversion you can get if you own dollars is to use an ATM that dispenses a local currency...so that is fine, but then you're stuck with big bills. So we take dollars, lots of $1 and $5 bills. The staff can exchange them at their bank or currency exchange in town and get much better rate than you can currency exchange in tourist area.
Tipping in local currency is always better. Avoids the staff/workers to pay for currency exchange. We order some pesos from a bank a few days/week prior to our departure and voilà! Also, we’ from Canada and (at least last time/last year) we got a better deal to convert CAD$ to MX$ than we would have had in USD$.
We like using pesos when at the pool since my better half can keep them in his swimsuit. They are water proof so it works great! We try to use mostly pesos but also toss in USD sometimes.
Last time we went took $200 in fives and $100 in tens and $100 in ones and $60 for the Boobs Cruise and it seemed like enough. I think we had about $30 when we got home. That was for a 7 night stay.
We were there last week, service was not good at all in some areas. Sometimes it got worse after giving a tip. Don't think they are capable of operating at or near capacity.
We were going to go the pasos rought but didnt want to end up shorting someone when the night got fuzzy and i had to do math. We tiped well enough to cover any conversion cost. Also may I sugest if you have any money left over un you tipping budget donate it to Chinos cause for cancer When we had the same experience in September as KevChrissy so Chinos got a sizable donation Aitana North American Children's Association
