How much for what and when? And what currency? (We Brits don't really do the whole tipping thing) Thanks!!!
That is a very good question. Currency can be pesos or US Dollars, both spend just fine here. If you tip in euros, pounds, Canadian dollars, yen, won, dong, etc. the person you tip would need to go to an exchange house to get pesos to spend. I'll speak in US Dollars~~ Airport Transfers: I like to give $1 - $2 to the greeter at the airport (if you book private transfers), $1 - $2 to the porter if they carry my luggage (but I do not usually let them help me) and $5 - $10 to the driver each way. That might seem excessive but so many workers here depend on tips for their salaries, much like waiters back home. Bellboy: $2 - $5 Bartender: $5 - $10 I like to use the same one all day Waiter: 20% Tour guides or boat crew if you go on a tour: $5 - $20 Boobs Cruise crew: $20 - $40 (per couple) but I would tip more if I could afford to, they are AWESOME! All of these DEPEND ON SERVICE. Generally speaking the service in Cancun is not up to the standards I remember from the US. Tipping is also a very personal thing...everyone has their own ideas about what a "good" tip amount is. Tipping is also optional, but if you go to a nightclub and pay for open bar, you probably won't get a drink until you tip your waiter / bartender. Just my opinions...
Thought I would just bring this up front again....especially since there are so many newbies coming in NOvember. It's great tip information. Everyone in Cancun you meet works very hard and depends heavily on tips so treat them well. Especially the staff of TTR. Don't be afraid to tip ANY of the staff. I like to surprise them (girls that tend the bathrooms near sexy pool with those great fresh towels....people sweeping....people cleaning the beaches....EVERYONE appreciates tips but these people REALLY appreciate it since they don't get recognized too often.
But what do you tip your waiters at the nicer restaurants since it's all inclusive ? Also is the hotel able to break larger bills?
If you just ask they wont have change for a $20. But if you tell the bar tender your out of ones and fives so you have no money for a tip 20 ones appear pretty damn quick lol. We usually are not as generous as Trina. For good service, we tip $1 per bag to each, driver and porter and bellboy. We give the bartender $1 each time we order drinks. If waiter or waitress brings us drinks we give $1 per drink. We give housekeeping $20 for the week. For tours and charters we give 10%-20% depending on the service. With a little extra $5 or $10 for people like Chino who make the cruise. Waiters at the all inclusive we give $5. As stated this is for good service. But we always have had good or better service. Maybe we need to adjust our tipping. I am also curious what others tip.
Sounds about right, but I do increase the tips for exceptional service , which seem to be all the time at TTR
Chinos is awesome and I'll never say a bad word about the guy. He'd be less awesome if the boat didn't move and drinks didn't magically appear through the little window. All the guys on the boat earn their keep and are a part of Chinos's awesomeness.
Tip a little more than you think you ought to and you won't have any regrets, later. Nobody's getting rich here, off tips, and every dollar you leave behind gets put right back into the economy. Everybody wins.
