We are making our second trip to TTR in October and we're curious about time shares. What are the costs of buying in and what are the benefits of being members? And are there any benefits to sitting through the presentation even if we won't be buying? We're interested in buying if it's A) affordable, and B) worth what we get.

We bought in last time we were there. For $5k we got a week a year for pretty much the rest of our lives. Not a bad deal. One thing... if you do buy in, demand that unless you get a room upgrade now you are not buying. Worked for us. Upgrade rooms are great. As a member you automatically go in one. Oh... you also get to use the hot tub in the spa for free. What you do in that dark, unsupervised room in the water is up to you. Worth it!

Several friends bought timeshares, then they were told the company went out of business and their "deed" was useless. I know many people here encourage the time share thing, but I know it's a total scam. Nobody would try so hard to sell you something if it actually was worth it. We've been there many times and we were never denied anything that the "premiere" members were supposed get exclusively. If it's such a great deal then you can get it next year also. Why would they try so hard to sell you something that would Benifits you and not them?

We bought on our first trip. There are see real price levels from $2,500 to $25,000. The value of it depends on your point of view.

    The good:

Upgraded room - further upgraded by membership purchased
Upgraded alcohol - if you care
More choices of entrees at restaurants - if you care
Free airport transfers - if you get it into your membership
Free wifi - if you're cool you can get more than 1 wifi pass ea trip
Use of resort yacht - cost of $300-$400 depending on your membership

1-3 weeks free per year - there are still resort costs involved

    The Bad:

You have to pay for it
You cannot use your free weeks until you pay 50% of you membership.
They will make the Referrals that you are able to give seem very valuable but they are not...if you send ppl on a referral and get sit for the pitch your membership is credited $250. If they buy you get another $250.

They have new package add on like flight reimbursement and a buyback program. We did not add these and I really didn't look at them to see the value.

We will be there for our 3rd trip in June. So since we intend to return to the resort 1-3 times a year it works out...

We bought someone elses membership for a little less than half what they paid for it. The only thing they used was the one free week the got. So we still had the 175 nights to use and 22 years to use them. Its not for everyone it makes sense to some and not for others. We decided that TTR was going to be our vacation spot, so it made sense for us. With referral credits it will pay for itself in a few years, plus the discounted upgraded room rate is another added savings

Any business can go belly up and most eventually do. However, I think Original is going to be around for a while, so I feel good about my investment in FUN.

FYI. Just returned from 12 days at the resort. Something maybe up; survey team with lasers measuring and marking every part of the buildings and grounds. Just to add to the construction/destruction theories going around. They were then going around and repainting the walls to hide the numbers being inked on the walls and floors. Nails were also driven in the ground and given numbers and different colors.

Timeshare folks where not to interested in talking about it.

Probably getting ready for major remodelling for sure. The markings are probably more consistent with line locating (power, sewer, water etc etc) than anything else. It helps them to create a detailed map so that they can refine their plans and reduce risks of hitting something when they start excavating as part of the renos.
