Are there any tianguis (or flea Market / Swap Meet) in Cancun? If so, where are they located, what day of the week is it open and what items are sold (any fresh fruit and vegetables)? Is there any place to sell used household items (furniture, appliances, etc) in the area? How about cars?

There are two tianguis that I know of. You could sell your used household items at either of them, although you'd have to get there a bit early (10 am at least), and most people already have a designated spot, so it might be difficult to find an area to set up.

The biggest one sets up every Sunday along Avenida Lopez Portillo... more on the western end (as you head out towards Merida), before you get to the big military base. You'll find clothes, food, furniture, etc. I think it's about where Lopez Portillo hits Andres Quintana Roo, but the whole thing takes up a bunch of streets, so it's hard to miss.

There's a smaller (but still pretty decent sized) tianguis every Saturday. To get to it, I think you just drive north through San Antonio neighborhood and keep driving north for a few blocks, and you'll find a few streets with people selling stuff. They sell mainly clothes along with snacks, handmade furniture, knick knacks, etc. I've sold my used clothes here a few times and made about $500 pesos each time.

There's a small fruit/veggie market that sets up on Avenida Kohunlich (near Avenida La Luna) some mornings, but to be honest i can't remember which days... I wanna say on certain weekdays. They set up in the median area in the middle of the road, somewhat close to Plaza Tucanes.

Market 23 also has a great selection of fruits, veggies, meats, seafoods, etc, from what I understand. (open every day, I think... )

The main car tianguis is at the football (soccer) stadium every Sunday.

I would like to mention that a law went into effect sometime in October 2008 that went unnoticed until folks went to register/re-register their Mexican/Nationalized vehicles. It requires one to hold Mexican citizenship or an FM2 in order to register a Mexican/Nationalized vehicle.

So, unless one is citizen, has an FM2 or someone who is/has either one and is willing to have the vehicle and insurance in their name for you, think twice about buying a Mexican/Nationalized vehicle.

Good suggestions from Grinagtion and Gonzo.

The place on Lopez Portillo, if coming from Kabah, will be on the right, pretty much across the street from the Chedraui with the Auto Zone in front. Parking is a joke. It seems to go on forever, not so much along Lopez Portillo, but deep.

If coming from Andres Quintana Roo, make a right on LP and go maybe 3/4 mile. If you know where that Chedraui is, I have had luck parking before the Chedruai, along the street.

I concur with Gonzo about the fruits and veggies at Market 23 and the place on Kohunlich from Gringation seems popular though I have only driven past it. A much more manageable place though than the one on LP.

As for car selling, you must not have been on Kabah on a Sunday, pretty much between Xcaret/Andres Quintana Roo and Mega. Most of the action is on the east (Mega) side of Kabah, even in the street but there is plenty of action on the west too. Another "good luck parking" location.

And speaking of gas grills Pocodinero, I went to Servi Star at Cancun Mall today. The exact grill that I think I/we paid $1,450 a couple of years ago, is priced at $2,025. I took a pix with me cell. It does NOT come with a tank, nor do they have any covers available at the moment. If you want to see without going there, PM me your email or cell and I will send it to you that way.

    Cheers,

Rawkus - No, this tianguis is much further west on Lopez Portillo... way down past the intersection with Kabah.

I heard that the street vendors in the crucero were kicked out as well, but since I never go into that area I can't confirm.

All I know is that my brother-in-law keeps complaining about how ever since some señora named "Doña Mari" got kicked out of Crucero, he really misses her tacos, so I guess it's true. :(

    Rawkus,

I have not been to the Crucero (intersection of Lopez Portillo and Tulum) on a Saturday morning in a long time, but used to go often.

There was this little old man with a push cart who parked there for many years, selling "buñuelos". I have no idea on that spelling. They were these little things about 2 or 3 times the size of a donut hole. They were 7 for $10. He would kind of open them up and squirt in some honey that seemed to watery for me. But I was good for about $20 pesos worth, half of which I would eat.

Now you make me want to go there this Saturday, so I will try to get there. I also remember that when he sold out, he left. When it was noon he left, whether sold out or not. If he is not there I can head back to the corner and get a Torta de Lechon.
