Everyone always says "don't drink the water in mexico". How is the water in the resorts there (I would assume it'd be different than the poorer areas?)?
It's not bad but you will most def. get at least a lil' stomach ache if u use it for drinking because it's not as treated as it is in USA/Canada, there ain't no bad stuff in there but there are bacteries that your stomach is not used to so it will fight a bit (maybe diarrhea). You probably won't have to use it except for toothbrush anyway lol.
The water in all of the resorts is purified. Ice comes from purified sources, often by by trucks. You can get bottled water everywhere. We are not exacltly 3rd world, even water wise. We have 3 Walmarts, 2 Sams Clubs a Costco and more. If you are worried I suggest stopping by a health food store and picking up a bottle of Kyo-dolphilus. It is a "good bacteria" and when I was a tourist I always did this. You take 2 day for a week before the trip, during the trip and a week following it. IF you get the dreaded Montezuma's revenge, farmaicas are everywhere and the best and easiest to take is Lomotil and is widely available. Tiny little pills. Cannot tell you the last time I took one, but I have them in my home, and I also have a bottle of the Kyo-d in my frig. It does not have to be kept cold but it extends the shelf life. Comes in bottles of 90 capsules, enough for 2 ppl for about 3 weeks of "treatment and prevention". Personally, I would not give it a thought but this is a piece of mind reply to your post. You are right though about the outlying areas. I would brush my teeth with a beer instead of tap water in really remote areas, but you won't be remote, even if you go outside the hotel zone. Downtown bars and restaurants are fine too. You are good to go. Enjoy the trip.
I have an extremely sensitive stomach, and didn't have any problems when we went.(Riu Cancun) Only one day, but that was from too much alchohol! I had drinks with ice cubes in them, drank fountain pop, brushed my teeth with the hotel water, but drank bottled water. I agree with TJ, take some acidophilus tablets, or even eat some good quatlity yogurt before and during your trip. Have fun!!!
IMHO most all cases of "Montezuma's revenge" these days are in fact cases of overindulgence, from alcohol, food, or just too much sun and excitement. If you know you have a sensitive system, take TJ's advice and get some meds before you travel...
Never had a problem with the drinking water and my stomach gets upset over the slightest thing. So I would not really worry.
Thanks everyone for responding. I'm not much of an alchohol drinker, and I'm near southern california, so "mexican water" that I grew up hearing about is tijuana, so I had no idea what it was like where all the action/tourists are. So without the alchohol or the water, I was wondering what I was going to do, lol. Glad to know the water is good *thumbs up*
Yeah.. just to clarify, by "drinking water" we don't mean water from the tap... no one drinks water from the tap here... not so much that it's dirty coming in, but since it's not pumping 24/7 like in the US the water is stored in tanks on people houses/businesses and those tanks are usually not especially clean.. its fine for washing and such but people don't usually drink it. When I first moved here someone told me that the big issue locally drinking the tap water wasn't so much getting sick, but getting awful kidney stones due to the high calcium content... don't know how true that was, but seeing how "hard" the water is around here I could believe it. In any case, you'll not find any hotel, bar, or restaurant in the area serving people city tap water to drink, especially when they can overcharge you for a bottled water... :xyxthumbs: All that being said, most of the big hotels have fancy water pressure systems with purifiers anyway, so it's probably not even a factor if you're staying at one of the bigger hotels, but IMHO its best to stick to bottled water just the same as their filters might not be changed as often as they should be.
