...and now people have died as a result. It appears he decided to celebrate 9-11 by promoting a film in which a persecuted minority Christian group in Egypt, the Coptics, insults Islam. This has already resulted in the death of the U.S. Amassador to Libya, and others. The people of Egypt won't waste time attacking the Coptic Christians in their country, as well. The man enjoys a sensation, but others pay the price for it. What can he be thinking? This is an article written early in the string of events, before the Ambassador was killed, in which an editor from the Atlantic Magazine attempts to interpret what's happening. The Movie So Offensive That Egyptians Just Stormed the U.S. Embassy Over It - Max Fisher - The Atlantic
The movie was made in the U.S. by an Israeli film maker, according to the Associated Press. He is quoted about his reasons for making the film, and his thoughts on the reaction to it, in this article- Anti-Islam filmmaker in hiding after protests - Yahoo! News
The hateful motives of the film maker are clearly revealed in his callous comments, following the death of the Ambassador. In cases of this type, we normally assume that freedom of speech will protect the authors of this type of production but it has long been recognized that speach which tends to incite to violence can be limited. Terry Jones, and especially the maker of this very amateurish film, should not only be ashamed of themselves (which they are clearly not), but should be prosecuted for reckless disregard for the safety of others (akin to shouting "fire" in a crowded theater, knowing what the reaction will be; and, in fact, hoping for the anticipated reaction). The direct result of these actions were the death of the Ambassador. It seems that while the assault was planned, the organizers took advantage of the promotion of this film to incite a crowd, which gave cover for the subsequent attack. True to their historic role ("...to the shores of Tripoli"), U.S. Marines have been sent to Libya.
I don't know how closely you may be following this unfolding story, but now the actors are saying they were deceived about the purpose of the film. ‘Innocence of Muslims’: The film that may have sparked U.S. Embassy protests | The Lookout - Yahoo! News The maker of the film is quoted by the Associated Press as saying "Islam is a cancer". People who incite to violence, as he has done, are the cancer.
As the press digs further and further into the origins of this film, it now appears that though the film maker said his name was Sam Bacile, and that he was an Israeli Jew, neither now appears to be true. This dude is a danger to the security of US and American around the world. Showing a movie is NO WHERE near an "excuse" to do what these protesters have done and are doing, buy what Terry Jones is doing is certainly NOT helping the frosty relationship between Muslim nations and Americans. Someone should stop him, preferably a fellow American citizen. Ps. Funny that he looks like an alcoholic redneck.
I watched the trailer for that movie yesterday. Damn near made me sick seeing how twisted this 'film maker' and Terry Jones have to be to think that this movie was a good idea, or a reflection of reality. Not to excuse what's happened in the aftermath but I can't say I'm surprised either.
Events of the last twenty years or so have brought the Islamic world to a boil. Being extremely thoughtful, in both word and deed, is the best that we can do. There is something about the death of our Ambassador that seems to have sobered people on this side of the world: if there is any good that came from his death, this may be it.
Maker of the film has now been arrested for parole violations, charged with repeatedly lying to investigators and with having obtained official identification of various types, using multiple aliases. He was denied bail, and remains in a Federal jail in Los Angelos.
