I have a question from a tourist I don't know the answer to. Is there a good place in Cancun or Playa where one can taste different tequilas and purchase? I only know one place on 5th in Playa and it might be a tourist trap. Thanks Rob
The Distilleria in the HZ has tastings and a small tour on how Tequila is made. I dont think it would be the best spot to buy it though. I dont really remember if they do sell any, I tasted way too much.......:aktion061:
Ritz-Carlton Cancun does a Tequila Flight each night in the lobby bar (I think it's $60 US, per person) and they also have a Tequila Tasting on Friday nights, which is more involved than the Tequila Flight. I think that one is over $100 US, per person, but I can't remember. They use good tequilas there and, at the Tequila Flight, you taste a blanco, an anejo, and a reposada. I think they might try more tequilas during the tasting. I don't think you can buy tequilas there, however. Also, you have to make a reservation for either version of the tastings at the Ritz, but you do not have to be a guest of the hotel to participate in the tastings. Just make a reservation and fork over some cash. Also, the Tequila Herradura Sensorial Museo is a fun place to go. It's above La Europea, in the hotel zone (near Plaza La Isla). You take a tour of the museum and learn about the history of tequila and all that jazz. Then, after the tour, you go to the tasting room and taste Herradura tequilas. The price of admission depends on how many tequilas you wish to taste. I believe the least expensive price is $60 pesos and the most expensive is $150 pesos, per person. I don't think you need a reservation unless you have a big group. And, of course, you can purchase tequila after the tour, in La Europea. And, as Gonzo mentioned, La Destileria does a tour and tasting. I found their tequilas to be inferior to those served at the other 2 places I mentioned. I'm no tequila expert, by any means, but the tequilas served at La Destileria were like lighter fluid but I could actually drink, and enjoy, the ones served at the Ritz and the tequila museum. The Little Mexican Cooking School, there in Pto. Morelos, did tastings at one time, but not anymore. However, it probably wouldn't hurt for you to contact them so they can let you know if they start that program again.
There are a few stores in the hotel zone that I think are called Plaza La Fiesta. There is one in Plaza Flamingo and they always have a few bottles on display that you can taste for free or you can out something in the tip cup that is there. I also think that there is a tequila "class" at the Hacienda Sisal at the Royal Sands Resort on Sundays from 5 -7(taught by the guy that used to be at the Ritz).
That's great to know about Hacienda Sisal, pocodinero. I thought that guy (that used to be at the Ritz) was no longer doing tastings like that. Thanks for the info!
Last year we were in Chedriu on Tulum and were in the liquor dept and the lady stocking the shelves asked if we would like to taste anything. I found that kind of funny, in a good way.
