If you mean buying things, then Mexico is your typical tourist destination. You can barter to get prices down, although it's a bit of an effort to get things down to a reasonable price.

I bought a silver bracelet last trip for MXN$500 (roughly £26). Starting price was MXN$3000 (£157).

Another point - tipping is a lot different in Mexico to here. Here we tip if service is good, but in Mexico it's customary to tip well for everything. Make sure to bring money for tipping at the resort for cleaners, restaurants, bars etc. We went for lunch off the resort, and tipped around 20% of the total bill - waiter came running up to us and said we hadn't tipped enough. Make sure to ask the price of alcohol before drinking it. Once you've drank it you could get ripped off because you didn't ask first - same goes for taxis.

Prices on Isla Mujeres were excellent. I bought a few presents for people here. Drinks are a lot cheaper there too. About £1 for bottled beer. Prices in hotel zone for drinks is a lot more, paid around £4 for a bottled beer in Senor Frogs - needless to say we didn't stay long!
