Had a call from Telmex the other day saying not to disconnect our modem as we were about to be upgraded. Since then service has been really patchy with pages timing out, however, just noticed something download unusually fast and checked my speed: Looks like we are on a 6MB connection now, not too bad. Upload speed is still not great but I rarely have to upload large files so not too concerned. Anyone else see an upgrade?
It sure would be nice if Telmex and Cablemas would get closer to US or UK speeds, but I'm not holding my breath.. as for the upload speed... that is a big issue for many of us... you can barley even use a decent webcam with the speeds they provide, and never mind making a call at the same time.. I recently installed some IP security cameras for a friend and it was disappointing to see how choppy the online video quality was to say the least, and it's made his magicjack useless unless he unplugs the cameras before making a call... at this point I think I'd be happy with current download speeds if it meant they would get the upload closer to the +1mbit range...
Very weird you posted that Steve, I was just hoping for someone to do this the other day, thinking it's about time for an upgrade, if Cablemas are offering 6 or 8mb. Then along comes your post, i'm all excited, go to check and I see I still have the 1000 pesos a month telmex fail... Hopefully it will change soon but I won't be holding my breath either! The upload speed is embarassing isn't it?
Steve - If I try New Orleans, I get a worse result, I see from yours that the ping is very high for you too, i wonder what you get at Mexico City, same speed?
We called about this and it seems that you are one of the 'lucky' ones Steve! They say it isn't an 'upgrade' but what they are doing is testing increased speed, they are switching over to fibre optics soon and we should expect to see a roll out of 20mb internet across the whole country, not just Mexico City and North. I'll believe it when I see it, i'm still getting 3mb when I pay for 5mb.
I tell lies, a mind-numbing 3.42 meg on that test! Come on, at this rate, one day we might be able to watch a stream that works bigger than 150k!
