If we don't book a transfer, are the taxis safe? What's the price difference between taxi/prearranged transfer?
we've never taken a taxi but from what ive herd, tacis are more expensive... we use USA Transfer which can actually access through this site by clicking the link at the bottom of this page where it says "Cancun Airport Transfers"... its only 55 bucks round trip for up to 3 people... doesnt get better than that !
And if you book thru USA Transfers you don't have to wait for the van to fill up and stop at every friggin hotel that you DON'T want to be at.........it's a DIRECT ROUTE. (Don't forget to bring nips (tequila ..tee hee) for the ride!)
Steve had a good post about this a month ago. I'm relaying this as well as I can remember what he said, but basically the 'taxis' at the airport aren't real taxis. Instead they are something that will be way more expensive. Either Best Day or USA Transfers are a much better option. For some reason, regular taxis are not allowed to give rides from the airport to the hotels.
We used USA Transfers and it is so nice not to worry about anything. They are there when you land and always on time to pick you up from hotel. No need to make calls or anything. Only way for us to go.
Steve's comments: $60 or $70 there in a 'cab' plus $30 back with a real taxi, or $55 round trip with USA Transfers? Real cabs are not allowed to pick up at the airport, only drop off. The only company who can pick up without pre-arranged bookings is a company called greenline who have the word 'taxi' written on the side of their vehicles, but they don't operate anywhere else outside of the airport. They have simply paid for a very expensive exclusive licence to operate and rely on overcharging the uninformed who arrive with no other transport option.
Best advice...use this link from the CancunCare site: Cancun Tours and Airport Transfers Forum | Cancuncare Forum
USA Transfers is awesome. When you walk out of the airport, skip the "tiki bar" on your right hand side that sells 12 oz beers for $7 each, and ask your drover to stop at the OXXO that is right off the airport property. It only takes about 2 minutes, and I bought 2 16 oz beers, plus a Gatorade for the driver, it cost me $4.
We used USA Transfers, as well, and loved it. I can't recommend them strongly enough. Not a single problem and they were incredibly reliable. We'll use them for any future Cancun trips.
Last year our flight was delayed 2 hours out of airport but no one to tell us that, so we waited and waited for USA transfer, after about 30 minutes and getting close to panic we took a cab, 50 bucks split 3 ways worked out. Even 50 bucks was worth it. Negotiate the price before you even drive off.
