Taxi drivers are again causing problems for tourists using private airport transportation companies. There have been road blockages and clashes with Police. Some tourists have missed their flights home as a result. The taxi drivers are protesting at loss of business that the private companies 'take from them'. They believe they should be the only form of transport back to the airport - presumably so they can set their own rates in a monopoly. They are very strongly unionized and have close political ties with the current Cancun administration, so are receiving some support from some quarters. I just spoke with Brant, the owner of USA Transfers, and he has had 4 vans illegally impounded today, the vans were early for hotel pick ups and were waiting nearby. Obviously, a reduction in vans can mess up the whole days scheduling. There are no problems with airport pick ups, it's the return pick up from your hotel where there may be some inconvenience. I should point out that this problem isn't confined to USA Transfers it's all transfer companies. Please bear in mind there may be some problems, and be on time for your pick up. There may be some delays in getting to the airport but of course, all transfer companies will be doing what they can to ensure their customers remain satisfied. *phew* at least it's not the transfer *from* the airport. They'd be standing between me and a cocktail...things would be bound to get violent
Thank you for the excellent information Steve. We will book our transfer for April mid March sometime so hopefully by then all this would blow over.
