A friend and I will be there beginning May 14 for 2 weeks and she really wants to go swimming with turtles! The only place we can find around Cancun is way in Akumal Bay..is there somewhere closer this can be done? 31 days baby!!
Hi Gracie, Akumal really is the only place where you can pretty much guarantee a turtle spotting (the name of the town means "place of the turtles" or something similar). You can see turtles at the turtle farm/sanctuary on Isla Mujeres, but you can't swim with them. You won't find them in Cancun proper, I've never seen them in Puerto Morelos (hmmm, maybe once while snorkeling the reef) and not in Playa either. I absolutely recommend going south to Akumal, the main beach early in the morning is a great place to snorkel and see turtles (I went once a few years ago and saw ten turtles within ten minutes). I then recommend going down the road a bit to the Yal Ku lagoon, phenomenal snorkeling, you may even get to see a ray. Like I said, Akumal is the place to be for turtles.
Akumal I went to Akumal last year on a tour from a Cruise and it was amazing....I must have saw 20 turtles and they are right off the beach so it was rather easy snorkeling....I know it is a ride from Cancun but, well worth the trip!!! Easily one of the best tours I have ever been on!!!
Yep, Akumal is your place for seeing turtles in the ocean. In Cancun you'll have to be very lucky to see them.
