Hi All, First post here - please be gentle! My girlfriend and I are holidaying in Cancun from 12th - 27th Oct ( staying at the Gran Caribe). We would love to swim with dolphins. I have looked at Dolphin Discovery and it seems impressive. I'd like to know anyone's recommendations on how to book.. should i book in advance online, or wait til i arrive in Cancun and possibly get a better/discounted deal? Mark
Eh up fellow Nottinghamian! I would say book online. At many times of the year the dolphin swims are far more popular than the number of dolphins available, so booking in advance guarantees you can swim when you want to, not when there's a spot available. That said, availability for you in Oct is not going to be a problem. The best option for dolphin swims is thought by many to be the Isla Mujeres Dolphin Discovery option, there's details in the link below: Swim with Dolphins in Cancun Far from finding a better deal once in Cancun you'll probably find it more expensive. The most expensive way will be to book through your tour operator Thomson/First Choice etc. Ever wondered why the 'welcome meetings' are so soon after you arrive? Well, it's so you havent had chance to discover the real prices and are already committed. Then you'll have the tour companies based within the hotel. The companies have to pay to rent the space and pay people to sit there all day. Their overheads are high and their prices often reflect that. Outside of the hotel are kiosks and little agencies that will probably have better prices than inside the hotel but not usually as good as online. You also need to make sure when comparing prices that you are comparing like with like. There are a range of different swim with dolphins options and I've known people to be sold the cheapest option at almost the price of the most expensive, and then thinking they got a good deal. Another reason for booking online is that of service and reputation. Most of the online sellers have been around for years and depend highly on reputation for repeat business. Geraldo from 'Golden Maya Tours' in his tiny kiosk that changes hands every 6 months isnt going to worry too much about service and honesty as he almost certainly works on the principle that he'll never see you again and you'll never be able to find him again if there's a problem that needs sorting. Online sellers are alwasy there and always contactable even when you get back home.
Cheers Steve, me duck!! Thanks for your advice. I think we'll book with the Dolphin Discovery company in advance, for the Islas Mujeres swim. I'm originally from Wollaton by the way. Currently live in Long Eaton. Cheers, Mark
