I believe that prices for liquor/sunscreen etc are much cheaper at local supermarkets--can someone give me directions--by bus---to the nearest one to the hotel zone. Is there an issue with mosquitoes in the hotel zone/downtown at this time of year? Is there a difference in time between Cancun and EST? Thank you for your help.

    Walmart

Catch the bus to Walmart anywhere along the hotel zone. Just look for Walmart on the front of the bus. How easy. There's also a great liquor store accross the street, Europa.

    Never had skeeter problems.

Mosquitoes hit around dusk, but even then there aren't many. I hardly ever wear repellent, just when I'm planning to be in the jungle, or drinking for hours on the patio...

Mosquitoes love me so I almost always wear repellant certain times of the year. If not I will get bit.

But this isn't one of those times.

Cancun is on CST not EST. If it's 8pm Eastern, it's 7pm CST.

They spray the hotel zone heavily for skeeters so it's not a big problem, but as said, if you are headed to the jungle or outside of the hotel zone, something with deet is recommended. Deep Woods Off does it for me.

    Two thoughts on mosquitos:

Even though they may spray for them in the Hotel Zone, if you plan to dine outdoors at any of the lagoon side restaurants, you run the risk of becoming a meal yourself.

That being said, if you are a frequent mosquito target then we highly recommend that you bring your own repellant from home that contains Deet. It has been impossible for us to located products with Deet in them in Cancun.

I was a vegetarian for 13 years and got next to zero mosquito bites during that time. Now I eat enough meat to survive in Cancun's extremely un-veg-friendly restaurants and I get bitten occasionally.

So RiverGirl, with your veggie roots and healthy lifestyle, I'm surprised you get along so well with our favorite carnivorous, vice-ridden Canuck! :)
