Hey everyone...I'm looking into being in the Cancun area July 15-Aug15 (maybe till the end of Aug). It will be me, a dog, a jeep cherokee. My big requirements are that it's close enough to the beach (preferably within walking distance), close enough to food (I'm a lazy cook), allows me to have the dog indoors (medium size, very well behaved), and is safe for a single woman. I speak limited spanish, but my goal is to go there and spend my summer speaking/learning only spanish. And to have fun, sit a on beach, and have an adventure of a summer (perhaps jump on a Boobs Cruise or something). My favorite place I've been to in a while was Isla Mujeres to give you an idea of what I like. And it needs to be cheap and furnished (since it is only a month or two) - but I require very little "fancy" stuff. Basic cooking utensils and a bed would be cool. Studio size is perfect. What costs am I looking at? I'm seriously willing to go tiny - studio, hovel-ey is OK. What requirements from the govt am I looking at? Everything I see tends to be for "moving" there, not for a temporary move. Where can I look for places? Are there any safe websites? Or is this a get-there-and-get-done kind of thing? I'm excellent at flying by the seat of my pants. I can couch surf for a few days. Help! What questions am I forgetting to ask?

For the stay you're talking about you won't need to do anything special. You will be admitted as a tourist for 180 days, more than enough to accommodate your plans. Medium length, relatively inexpensive accommodations are available from a variety of sources, but you may have to settle for near the entrance to the hotel zone, and short bus ride to get to the beaches, to find the price you're looking for. For an example, see- Visit** Our Funjet [Click on downtown, then Uxmal Condo 2, to see what you can get for around $800 per month, short-term.] And, you can go a lot cheaper, renting a room for half that or less, in many cases. Your widest range of choices will be in the city, if you want to economize.
Thanks for the ideas. That condo you showed is WAY more than I need. I literally need aplace to sleep and perhaps cook some food. Nothing fancy. Any other ideas?
There are tons of places downtown along bus lines. When I first got here I was in an overpriced studio. Perfect for me and my pup...cost was 3500 pesos. Around $300 fully furnished
OK, I found a dream place. Casa Laguna - Isla Mujeres, Mexico The apartment is just the type of thing I'm looking for. Isla mujeres would be perfect. Of course, the apartment is already rented. If I sell my house by then, I'd happily rent the house. Question - WTF do you do with a car if you have one there? I wouldn't need it for the month over there....anyone on the board who could rent me a parking space?
Why take the car if you don't need it? I know you're taking you dog but he/she can fly too. A lot shorter time to get there, without having to be a single woman driving alone in the border area and long drives to get down to Cancun. I would say leave the car at home and figure the gas, hotel, wear and tear, stress, and time savings would be well worth the cost of flying. Just my thoughts.... Jamie
Actually - Cancun is the end of a 20 day road trip. And then after a month in Cancun, I'm going to drive up the left coast and visit family.
Roxie, I sent you a PM regarding a parking suggestion. BUT, you can go to Punta Sam, a bit farther than the ports for passenger ferries, and you could ship your car that way and have it on the island. Parking there is an issue too but you will have transportation when and if needed. I think it is $330 pesos or so each way and it includes a ride for one person. They call you a chofer = drivrer.
Thanks! I guess it all depends on where I end up on the island...whether I have parking or not. I also plan to bring my cutesy little bicycle - so that will be nice. Except the dog is scared of it - so I get to pick having the dog with me or riding the bicycle.
