Two hours is plenty safe. We usually try to get there 2 hours before our flight takes off. We have gotten there an hour and a half before our flight and still made it without any problems (and had time to eat some fast food). So I would say get to the airport between an hour and a half and two hours before your flight takes off. The airport has a large duty free shopping area, Margaritaville, Johnny Rockets, and Domino's Pizza, so in case you get there early, there is plenty to eat and drink.

Yeah, we like staying in Building 1, it is a nice spot. And we really liked Room 1335, the water pressure in the shower was excellent!

Some airline ticket counters are incredibly busy with huge lines as they have multiple flights leaving during the day. United, American and Delta to name a couple. Jet Blue has far fewer and seem to be more efficient than the big guys. Spirit only has a couple of flights a day so there is only one plane checking in at a time.

That said, most of them now tell you three hours, which is nuts to me. But you don't want to stress yourself out either. They all close the checkin one hour before the flight. Since you have been gone a few years we have a new International Terminal. You won't see much on your arrival but when you leave you can still enjoy Cancun at the airport so getting there a bit early is not going to bore you to death.

There are places like Margaritaville, Johnny Rockets, Starbucks and more to eat. There is almost a mall for last minute shopping if you forget a gift for someone.

I come and go every other month or so, uisually on Jet Blue and try to be there 2 1/4 hours before the scheduled departure time. If I have traffic or my limo is late, then I have 15 extra minutes of a cushion. JB has only one flight per day to the cities I fly to so if I miss it, I have to try again the next day. That only happened once but it was a mess.
