Hi, my gf and I will be visiting Cancun for the first time in early September and I have some questions about snorkeling: 1. Is it necessary to join paid snorkeling tours or are there places by snorkeling areas where we will be able to rent gears and life vests? 2. We will be staying in Cancun but would like to visit Akumal (heard good things about snorkeling there). Are there shuttle service from/to the place? And how much would taxi fare be? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Here's a recent thread with lots of info and answers to your questions about Akumal: http://www.cancuncare.com/forum/living-cancun-riviera-maya/16727-akumal.html There iss a regular bus service that you can take from the bus station downtown that stops nearby. It's about a 2 hour drive though so I think a taxi would be pretty expensive.
I was there on Tuesday. heres a pic. We had our own gear to rent it was 72 peseo for a rather poor quality tube and mask and 72 peseo for the thins. This was on the main beach.
