Suppose you have a car, six full days to devote to seeing the best Qroo has to offer, and you wish to start with a visit to Isla Holbox. Your budget is not tight, but it is not unlimited, either. You also wish to stay two nights at an all-inclusive somewhere along the route, making one or more day trips during your stay there. Traveling to Isla Holbox on day one and staying overnight, how would you spend the next five days if your aim is to get back to Cancun by the end of day six? Any suggestions for how best to fill the time?
Hmmm not a lot of time for exploring the best of the RM, but here goes: -Holbox: at least 2 nights so you can have 1 full day in there from what I'm told, mainly due to ferry times. -Then I'd do an AI in Akumal for 2 more nights -Lastly, some cabanas in Tulum for 2 more nights That way you won't stray too far from home, but still get to see several different destinations with different vibes. Can't wait to see what others recommend! You really can't go wrong anywhere around here.
I would do Ek Balam and Valladolid .Izamal followed by 2 nights relaxation in Holbox. I am aware the first 3 are in Yucatan but they are special. Bacalar is also a great option in the other direction and Sian Kaan (cesiak is a great place to stay ). Too many lovely places .Have fun xx
Itinerary We stayed at the EcoTulum resorts once (an my husband is dying to go back....if only we had more time) and it was great...but no electricity! The private little cabanas were quaint and we spent alot of time getting to know each other again since there was no TV or anything else as a distraction. We walked around the town of Tulum and sat on the porch overlooking the water every morning and evening, and just found it to be a great experience. We were in Bacalar this past week and that's real pretty too. We only drove through and had lunch there, but many people say it's really a nice place to stay. We were in Holbox over 10 years ago and the other posters were right...you need a minimum of two days because of the ferry...but it's absolutely worth the trip! I would even say spend 2 nights....it's just a beautiful gem! The mantas swim right up to you because they are so used to humans. The beaches are real pretty and quiet. You'll have a great time no matter where you decide to go...and it's all in your own backyard! Just go have a GREAT time!
A destination of Tulum would offer so much, including our fave, Aventura Spa Palace as the a-i. Or the Playacar Palace is another great a-i that we loved. Puerto Morelos, where our condo is, is a must for a day of visiting the reef for the 2 hour snorkel. Not to mention some Asian food at David Lau's Restaurant for the best food on the MR. Tell the waiter/manager, Valorie, that our (Karen and Don) Giants will kick her BELOVED Patriots' butts again! We had a great time - with a great guide - at the Tulum ruins, and would love to try Coba which we've heard MANY GOOD THINGS ABOUT. Then you could take the route from Coba that connects to Valladolid. A quaint town with an AMAZING cenote. From there Chichen Itza, then back to Cancun.
A hint to those replying to this thread. V has done most of these things. His guests have done the State of Yucatan, hence his request for things to do in Q.R. And in a private conversation V told me that their guests are not into Eco type hotels. That said, I like Gringations suggestions, less a day at each place, and Davisod's AI suggestions. In place of the days I would deduct at Holbox, Tulum and Akumal, I would add maybe a day at Majahual, Bacalar and Chetumal. At Tulum I have stayed twice at Hotel Piedra Escondida. I have spent 3 or 4 nights at Hotel Los Cocos in Chetumal which is cheaper and better than Holiday Inn, IMHO. I cannot recall the name of the place where I stayed two times in Majahual but there weren't that many options 4 or 5 years ago when I went there. It was south from the road coming in from 307. Maybe check with Yuvonne and have her ask her sister, who lives in Majahual. Don't expect to exchange money easily there either. Last I heard there was only one casa de cambio and zero banks. The casa de cambio is only open when a cruise ship is in port. Scott W also knows a guy there named Otto who sells tours, or did. Have fun.
Thanks to all who have offered suggestions, as they are all good ones. T.J. pointed out, and it is true that we are planning to focus on Qroo, but there is much we've not seen and done in this state, and I'll be considering all the suggestions of places others have found attractive. I know I'm a little out of step on the ecolodge approach to touristic development, but my guests are not quite there, either, so we'll probably not go that route, this trip.
We decided to jump the gun a little, and see Isla Holbox now, over the long weekend. We've been in Cancun two plus years and have never seen it, but I just spoke with someone who's been here twenty and never made it up there! With time, we'll be able to check out everyone's recommendations!
I've been here 6 and never made it! (had plans 3 years ago but there was torrential rain, had plans 2 months ago but they got cancelled) Have fun!
