We would like to go off the resort to do a little exploring one of the days. Where would be a good place to start, maybe like a outside market, or nice small shops?

Is the food worth trying off the resort or should we stay safe and eat there?

Looking to check out the Harley shop there as well.

    any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Try taking the ferry from cancun (fairly cheap) to Isle Mujeres. About a 40 ride there. Beautiful beaches, lots of shopping, you can rent a golf cart to get around. And the ferry runs often enough that you can come back whenever you decide.

I'd recommend Carlos & Charlies great food and a fun atmosphere. Isla mujeres is a nice day out, beautiful island and you can get some great food as well. There are some many places to eat and have a good time.

We always go down to Mocambo, it is on the crystal blue water and they have killer food (just don't get the buffet) there is some shops right across the street from there that we stop to get the kids items. We will be heading there again this trip... IT IS AMAZING!

If you want a really good high end restaurant, Harry's Grille is about as nice as they come. Prices are pretty good for the quality. Figure about $100 per person with reasonable wine. HARRY'S Prime Steakhouse & Raw Bar

Both times we've tried shopping at the little market in Cancun, we wound up with locals who absolutely insisted on "guiding" us and following us from shop to shop, demanding we come to their "cousin's" stall. We went from being polite to blatantly telling them to go away to trying to ditch them by ducking down an alley.

Isla Mujeres or Playa del Carmen are both 45 minutes from TTR--Isla by ferry, Playa by car--and are much more pleasant to shop and wander. Isla has a laid back, Caribbean vibe. Playa has a modern city, European vibe. Both have great restaurants.

just jump on the city bus (21 pesos for 2) head over to the center area (plaza Fiesta) where the Mexican outlet and all the clubs are...

Do not go into the outlet!
my wife filled a cart of trinkets and t shirts to bring back that totaled over $200.00. I convinced her to leave it all behind.

went outside and walked around a bit and got a bundle of t shirts in one of the little shops...Total cost was $155.00 - Total paid was $60 bucks

you can talk down the prices on EVERYTHING when you are dealing with the smaller shops and flea markets...all in all I save about 66% on everything I bought...

and if you take a trip to Chichen Itza - Do not buy at the area where they take you for lunch...Wait till you get to the ruins and you will save a boat load of cash

it may be a bit daunting or uncomfortable to haggle but they know that if they don't work with you the next guy will...

been there 5 times and i'm still learning new tricks
