What's available at the pharmacy/quick shop across the street and how do the prices compare to the airport, etc?
There are actually two pharmacy shops across the street. The one immediately across the street is an Ahorro, and the other is only about half a block to the left (East). That one just has a sign that says Pharmacy. We've shopped at both and they have the basics for the beach, some snacks, drinks, etc, and a working pharmacy where you can get most medicines. And in Mexico there are quite a few things over the counter that require a prescription in the U.S. They're way ahead of us on that. Most of the time we go to the one that says Pharmacy because the prices were a little better, but either is OK. As for prices compared to the airport.... NO COMPARISON... I've seen the same bottle of Flexiril at the airport for $75 that you can get at the Pharmacy for $15. Don't go back to the airport hungry or thinking you'll just grab a snack because it can cost you as much as a discount flight. Like $9 for a small bag of chips!
I've heard that they also sell Viagra there! Not a bad "snack" while at TTR. Can't hurt.............. jes sayin!
The pharmacy is more of a pharmacy that has a few other essentials (sunscreen, toiletries, etc). The other is more like a US gas station....soda, chips, snacks, liquor, plus anything you would want at the beach ( floppy hats, flippy floppies, sunscreen, inflatables, etc). They also have an ATM fee but is the most expensive ATM I have used anywhere, ever. IIRC, the ATM charges a flat fee plus an additional percentage of what you withdraw. My transaction cost around US$25. Insane. Bring cash or use the ATM at the airport (don't know what the fee is there, but surely it is cheaper). I've heard the pharmacy has a doc on site to perscribe meds if they aren't already available without a perscription.
Prices were good on everything across the street at either place IMHO. Even compared well to wal mart pharmacy, which we stopped at on the way in. Liquor at wal mart is still best price around though .....that we found. Besides the others mentioned, suggest you pick up 800mg Motrin (generic or actual Phizer) as it is not available in US w/o prescription.
We're traveling with carry on only and having enough sunscreen has been on my mind. Would a decent sized bottle of sunscreen be at a sensible price across the street or should i just stuck it up and get a bunch of tsa approved bottles?
I’m gonna say just suck it up and buy it when you get there. It’s just safer that way. We always put it in our check in luggage and never had an issue but we have had to give up things through our carry on. Good luck either way!
The last couple years my wife and I have come down with what looks like a heat rash. Went over to the doc across the street, he prescribed a shot, went back into the pharmacy to get it, then back to the doc who gave it to us. Total cost for everything was $12USD each. Well worth it. But last year, different doc, just prescribed cream, didn't work nearly as well. Just a thought if you don't feel like itching a few days.
